What are you looking for? There are a few nice sites, but nothing like there is for diamond shopping. I don't think that the internet and colored stone worlds have really met yet...buying serious colored stones is done more on a personal basis. Keeps the prices high, the level of consumer knowledge low, and the gems precious
. And since grading reports are more of an oddity that are often frowned upon by dealers, it's a potential minefield. Develop a relationship with someone knowledgeable who has good sources, and always even with a reliable source get a detailed lab report from someone like the AGL. Good luck...
True what you say, but here are the few exceptions that prove the rule:
cherrypicked.com
israel-diamonds.com
Pala International (go for search engine, specify name of gem only and go for it)
Africagems
Multicolour (dig for the top of the line for surprises)
Creativegems (go to the "over 40cts" cathegory for some greats)
http://www21.inetba.com/aapearlsgemsinc/productCat0.ivnu
and ref at ruby-sapphire.com (fun place)
and there might be others out there.
But yes, privacy is key, as some dealers will be happy to post on their website (so, weight, exact size and sometimes price are not disclosed before the potential customer shows serious intention to approach the price range).
Hope this helps, but this stuff is highly& hapilly adictive...
