Color Differences between Center Stone and Melee Stones?

Hi folks!

I believe I may have nailed down my center stone purchase and am now considering rings and settings.

One concern I have is over the color difference between the center stone and the melee stones. The center stone I am going to buy online is an RB 1.5ct I-SI1. I have visited a couple local jewelers and I can actually see an obvious color difference in an I colored center stone when mounted next to typical F-G colored melee stones, at least in the ones I've looked at in the stores. But many jewelers, the forums I've searched, and the extremely helpful James Allen CSR keep telling me that there should be no visible color difference especially since the platinum setting will make the center stone look extra white. When shown online photos, I can't see a difference. But I could see a difference in person at the store. Could it be that I may have just looked at inferior rings at the local jeweler? Are my eyes just super picky? Am I over analyzing it? I have no idea if it's just me or if my girlfriend would notice it or if it would even be a problem.

I am even considering making a special request for H-I colored melee stones just to avoid the color difference. Is this a smart move? Worth the extra work/$$? Will I then have to make the same changes to the wedding band melee stones when I start shopping for one? I imagine it would look odd as well if the e-ring melee stones look a different color than the wedding band melee stones. What are your thoughts?

I have a 2 ct I from bgd, set on a band with .02 melee f/g stones. It is pictures in my avatar (and in a couple other threads). I was concerned about the difference in color too, but I really cannot see a difference. The melee stones are just too tiny. My stone has medium blue fluorescence, so that may help, but I think you will be fine.

I did get an eternity band with 15 pointers (0.15) that are f/g (from idj), for my right hand, and I *can* see a difference btwn my center stone and those stones. But I think as long as your melee stones are small, it won't be an issue!

Are the I colored stones you are looking at in your local stones GIA or AGS certified? If not, they might actually be more tinted than the I colored stone that you are purchasing.

Yes, the jewelers claimed they were all GIA certified, but I did not verify this by requesting to see copies of the certs. I might make another trip down to the stores just in case and take another look.

Your ring looks beautiful! I would be ecstatic if there was no visible color difference in my ring as well. Does the color difference between your center stone and your eternity band bother you at all? Do you ever wish the center stone was a few grades higher? I'm just trying to anticipate how my girlfriend would feel about it when we start going wedding band shopping together and she starts seeing color differences. I would hate for her to second guess the quality of the diamond I selected for her.

Long story short - the colour difference you care about is the "apparent" (visual) colour difference, and the "apparent" colour difference is caused by many things - actual body colour difference is way down the list.

Single cut melee is a good alternative.
