I have absolutely no idea when it comes to diamonds so I am going to need some help here.

I found myself walking into a jewelry store yesterday and ending up putting a down payment to hold a diamond cause I was told it was extremely hard to come by and he also said it was their last one so he couldn't discount the price. It was a 2.01 J/I1 type IIA Bellataire Round Diamond cut by Lazare Kaplan.

I have tried to use a diamond pricing evaluator that I found on the internet but none of them seem to have the correct information that I need to put in there to get the price.

I trust the place that I bought it from since I have got other stuff from there and have been happy but I still have a few questions.

How much should I have paid for this?

Are they as rare as he says they are?

Did I get a nice diamond?

Thanks for all your future help!!

Did he make you aware of the fact that Bellataire diamonds were naturally browni in color, but have been subjected to HPHT treatment? Bellataire inscribes the girdle of all its diamonds with the name so there's no mistaking it for an untreated diamond. And the GIA report -- which is supposed to come with every Bellataire Diamond that's more than 3/4 of a ct -- will make note of that as well.

It's stable, meaning the diamond won't revert back to its formerly brownish self, but the selling price should definitely be lower than an otherwise comparable, non-treated, 2 ct stone that GIA has graded J in color and I1 in clarity

Do you want a treated stone? Or just a well cut stone that's less expensive?

He just showed me a similar diamond that was untreat and this one that was treated and I couldn't really tell a different between the two, but the price difference was a big difference. Just wondering how much I should have paid for it?

I know that e-ring diamonds are generally kept forever, but should you one day need to sell it for whatever reason (upgrade, hardship, etc), there is very little to no resale value for a treated diamond. Most people would rather an untreated diamond for their e-ring even if it means sacrificing a lot of size. The link below discusses the ingenious marketing of Lazare Kaplan and the Bellataire branding, making it appear as something rarer yet priced less than an untreated diamond.
