I need to find the perfect engagement ring for my girlfriend. She loves antique jewelry. She practically collects them.
My morale is low at this point. I haven't found the perfect one yet. She doesn't like plain white diamonds. I would like to have some color accents or a yellow diamond ring. She loves emeralds, sapphires, but not rubies.

Anyone have an suggestions? My price cap is at 8 grand. Recommendations would be great

What about this ring from Lang Antiques? It definitely isn't a plain white diamond - it is an antique 1.20ct L-SI1 rose-cut diamond (over 100 hundred years old) that Lang set into a Art Deco style mounting custom-made for the stone... one-of-a-kind, under your budget, and just gorgeous in my opinion! Here's the web-page: http://www.langantiques.com/products/item/10-1-4410

I absolutely LOVE the ring from Langs....In fact I almost bought it! The only reason I didn't is because it doesn't look like it would be comfortable, especially for daily wear.

If she has antique pieces now, can you sneak pictures of them, or even ask her to give you inspiration links?

Does she want a yellow diamond, a coloured gemstone, or simply a warm diamond like those in the lower ranges? Lower colour diamonds look AMAZING in an Old Cut. Does she antique cut diamonds? (such as Old European Cuts or Old Mine Cuts?) Or is she just not a diamond girl? Or is it that she doesn't like the white-white modern cuts?

You have an army of antique addicts waiting to help, but we need more info! :naughty:

Haha sorry. I think it'd be too obvious to ask her for pictures of her rings. But I will probably ask one of her friends to sneak pictures for me.

She is a diamond girl, she just doesn't like the "white-white modern cuts" as you put it :)
She loves yellow diamonds and she also does love old european cuts. She only likes white gold and platinum. I know this because I've heard her on the phone while she was shopping around for a new ring lol

What I am hoping to find (with help  )
A yellow diamond ring in my price range with sides stones
OR a white diamond ring with emerald or sapphire accents
OR a yellow, blue, or blue green sapphire with diamond side stones

I found The Natural Sapphire Company online for sapphires but I'm not sure about them because I have read not so good reviews.

My opinion is search for art deco ring.

Examples:

I think your lady is like me. We have the same taste in matter of jewelry. Take a look at Mels Antique or Israel Rose on the web, you will find treasures!

YES ART DECO! That is what I was looking for. I just couldn't think of the term
The rings you posted are very much what I am looking for. I think I like emerald one better but I'm not sure about the onyx

And you're the closest one to her taste so far. I think you definitely have the same taste. Thank you so much

I'm going to keep searching but to be honest I've spent HOURS looking at the types of rings you've described just for eye candy and this has been one of my favorites. It has french cut sides stones and that cushion is YUMMY!

Saturn Designs in NYC specializes in Art Deco and Edwardian styles (Edwardian is the period 15 years before Art Deco during Prince Edward's reign). They are gorgeous and the workmanship is excellent. Just make sure of your most preferred shape because once you start looking at all of their beauties it will confuse the crap out of you  ;-) They have much more in house then they post online. Can't wait, she's gonna love it with all of these great leads for you.

Does Saturn Designs (www.saturnjewels.com) have a brick and mortar store in NYC?! If so, what is the address? I thought that only partial selections of their line were carried by retailers.

I'M BACK with more questions :loopy:

From this post you will see that I have not yet proposed to my girlfriend. I did not have the chance to find the perfect ring before I left so now I'm back with more information to share. I hope you guys and ladies can still help me. She knows it is inevitable that I will propose so she's been hinting, and I have asked her friends to help me out and ask her.

What I found out...
1. She said she "loves loves loves" Edwardian and Art deco pieces. (In the saturnjewels.com intro she loved the piece by Peter Williams.)
2. She does not like plain bands, and would prefer smaller diamonds on the band.
3. Loves the halo style, diamonds surrounding center stone
4. Loves vintage/antique jewelry because of the history and craftsmanship
5. Platinum is the ideal metal but will like white gold. No yellow or rose gold
6. Does not like round cut. Likes Cushion, Radiant, Emerald
7. Does not like plain white diamond rings. Would prefer yellow diamond or a diamond center stone with emerald or sapphire side stones.
8. She doesn't want me to spend more than 7 grand but I still say my price cap is 8 grand
9. The center stone should be around 1ct.

Something like this would be great if it was not round...

I'm hoping to find something with all these qualities. A long shot? :-o

Perhaps you could convince her that an old European cut isn't the same as a plain old round ? That's a beautiful ring!

Round OEC stone, but in a hexagonal setting, way under budget:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/726095-JWL158/Stunning-Art-Deco-Platinum-Diamond

Yellow transitional round, ruby halo, way under budget:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/490404-ADRubyYellow/Spectacular-Art-Deco-Platinum-1

Probably not what you are looking for, but...

http://www.rubylane.com/item/449282-5806/Platinum-Diamond-engagement-ring-stunning

round, but four prong makes it look more squarish:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/571649-130-00222/Art-Deco-Platinum-Diamond-Engagement

http://www.rubylane.com/item/514555-rl-859/1-20-Carat-Diamond-Sapphire

round, out of budget, larger than you wanted, but very blingy!

http://www.rubylane.com/item/514555-rl-764/1-80-Carat-European-Cut

http://www.rubylane.com/item/510967-KAx20Artx20Decox20Ringx2032/Art-Deco-Platinum-Diamond-Ring

WAY out of budget, but the first cushion I found:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/518197-RGC11344G/Vintage-Art-Deco-Ruby-Diamond

round smaller center, but interesting:

http://www.rubylane.com/item/571649-100-00522/Platinum-Art-Deco-Illusion-set

I searched all Ruby Lane stores for "platinum engagement ring". Didn't look for white gold but there may be even more of those. Anyway, I think you will be able to find something lovely for your budget if these links are any indication, although finding a non-round could be a challenge.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you find!

That is a stunning ring. Maybe you could check Dover Jewelry? Keep in mind that sometimes their appraisals are a little off - but maybe they have something you are looking for and you can negotiate good terms

Well, my idea is a little over budget but found this amazing SQUARE cushion INTENSE YELLOW GIA SI2 diamond for $8k ...the cut is perfect for a nice cushion...mid 60's depth and mid 50's table. INTENSE YELLOW is very highly desirable and the square cushions are very sought after. The resale on a cushion is so much better than a radiant cut diamond...I KNOW because i just sold my radiant cut 2c diamond and could have gotten 3 times the price if it had been a cushion cut diamond (according to the dealer).

You could have it set in a plain 14k white gold setting and then let her pick an antique setting or design one herself.
Oh, and this stone has medium blue florescence so in some lighting it might look green, which would be a color change diamond...another highly desirable feature of this stone. It would be amazing set with blue sapphire side stones.

Ronni is the owner of buydiamonddirect and I purchased my 2c radiant from him 6 years ago. He is great to deal with. There are cheaper cushions but this one looks amazing and the only GIA intense yellow with great numbers and EX/VG

You only do this once and she wants a colored stone.

OH, wow, as you can see from these prices of fancy green diamonds they are very rare and EXPENSIVE, and the cuts are not very good for a cushion. But check out those prices!

32634158 1.70 Fancy Green I1 GIA 54.5 67 Medium-Extr. Thin None Good Good Faint 7.48x7.25x3.95 1.03:1.00 $90,100.00

Does anyone one know the effect of blue florescence on a yellow diamond???
Does it make the diamond look green in certain lighting????

yellow + blue makes green when mixed, but don't know if it would have that same effect in a diamond.
