Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of Dec

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

That is pretty awesome! Whats the size on that stone?

Steve

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

Thanks manda! Also, the setting is versatile. If you search the forum for bliss transformer, she had an amazing wrap made to turn her ring in to a three stone. I would link but am posting from my phone.

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

A 2ct 8mm stone :)

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

Could you take a picture not quite so close up so i could see its proportion better on your hand?

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

sorry its not jonathan commentating but hopefully the sizes of the diamonds and its optics can help you with your decision

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

The videos are very helpful. No longer worried about the SI1, even the SI2s i couldn't see any problems with in the HD video.

I keep coming back to the http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10108/ 2.4ct, but im having second thoughts on the size. At the local shop a 2.35 didn't seem impractical in my hand, but on the woman's finger it is kind of monsterous.

Once the Wow! phase is over, is it common for women to find larger stones unappealing to wear regularly?

Just search for "DSS" or "diamond shrinkage syndrome" and I think you'll find that the opposite is true. While some women may decide that a diamond that size is too large for everyday wear, lots more get used to the size and start thinking that it's not so big after all.

That's a lovely size, very big, but not in-your-face monstrous.

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

The only time a diamond might be uncomfortable is when it is far larger or far smaller than those in the person's social circle/family. In my case, I'd rather have a 2 ct in higher color and clarity, but if I had friends locally with 3 ct stones, you'd better believe I'd be wanting the 2.5 ct.!

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

Oh, and I also have a diamond and Vatche U-113 from Good Old Gold! Mine is smaller at 1.58 GVS1, though. I wear mine with the Tiffany Legacy wedding band, but Tiffany has many bands that look great with this ring!

Are all of your male friends going to hate you for being "that guy" who upped the game for everyone?

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

I'm sure they will be. I'm more concerned with my family. I come from pretty humble stock. I think my mother is the only woman in the world who doesn't like to get flowers...too expensive and don't last long enough. At least she can't complain about the durability of a diamond.

You guys have been amazing. I'm pulling the trigger tonight. I'll post up the finalists when I get home. Everyone around here seems to agree that the quality difference between "excellent/ideal" and the "signature/superior/premium" cuts is worth the extra ~20%? price wise it looks about equivalent to moving up a color grade. Setting aside the fancy imaging, can you semi pros tell the difference with your eyes?

Finally, does clarity, vs1 vs si1 have any significant impact on optical performance. Looking at so many photographs and pictures, I can't see any difference and don't understand why the premium is so significant. Moving up a level in clarity costs as much as color or cut...

Higher color and clarity are more rare and command higher prices due to that. Clarity can affect performance but usually not with SI1's. You wouldn't want lots of clouds, for example. I am much more cautious with SI2 and lower. Most of us here probably have larger diamonds than our mothers, so I wouldn't worry overly about that. But I would think hard about what you think your fiancee would be comfortable wearing in her daily world.

I can't answer the question about superior/signature being worth it unless I see the individual stones being considered. I think there is a peace of mind going for the "best", though. I have had both and it really does depend on the specific stones. It is good you are pulling the trigger tonight because the time is running out to get a setting made!

I would be worried about an SI2 in that size range BUT I also TRUST GOG to tell you if it is eye clean. For example, I was looking at a smaller round and they said it was eye clean and inclusion was prongable. I could NOT see the inclusion in the video or macro photos Jon took for me. At one point I was also looking at an SI2 cushion and they told me it was NOT eye clean, but the inclusion was on the side, not in the table. I just could not get over it not being eye clean. So, you can go with an SI1/2 ONLY if it's eye clean, in my opinion.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2864546.htm 2.03 ct G SI1 8.06x8.01 $22,575

Pro’s: Excellent color Excellent Cut Attractive Price Practical to wear
Con’s: Might not have enough Wow factor in the size.

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2718597.htm 2.3 J SI1 8.51x8.56 16700
Pro’s: Excellent Price, Left over budget would pay off her remaining student debt Wow Factor Size
Con: Bare minimum color, uncertain cut quality

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10108/
2.40ct I SI1 8.56x8.59 $24,251

Pro’s: Impressive size. Better than most Cut.
Con’s: Possibly too blingy

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1541924.asp 2.31ct J VS2 8.5x8.54 $22,556

Pro’s: Better than average ideal cut, nice size, notch up in clarity good price
Con’s: Weaker Color

I wish the last diamond were an I instead of J and SI1 instead of VS2 to keep the price similar.

Thoughts? This is killing me.

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

I am between the G and the I stones... I think with her small finger size, the G may be the way to go

Bold statement is impossible! Anyways, I love the JA one the best, and it definitely beats the GOG as far as cut. For the size and money, I say the JA. Unless either of the WF ones blow it out of the water. I'd request an image of both of those. And PS - the first Con on that WF stone, if she has small fingers anything over 1.5 will look enormous on her, so I wouldn't be as concerned with this...

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

That first 2 ct G SI1 is a virtual stone at WF, it is not an in-stock stone. So there is no magnified image, no idealscope, no real information to compare it to the other stones. WhiteFlash specializes in ideal cut stones in their ACA and Expert Selection categories. Those are stones they have had cut and they have them on hand.

These would be the ones close to your range (you should see 3 prices for each stone with the lowest one at the bottom):

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2782675.htm ($28,600..pricescope/wire pmt. discounts)

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2787740.htm ($26,677)

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2838117.htm ($24,102)

I would eliminate the J color stones because there is generally a visible tint to J color, so I consider it risky unless the recipient has picked it out. I'd choose between H and I color.

I definitely agree with this. J is too tinted for some people so I would not risk it for a purchase that is as important as an engagement ring.

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

You have some gorgeous options here! Just wanted to chime in to say that I agree on going with an H or an I (personally I'd love a J but not everyone does and they do have some tint). And also that I really hope you decide tonight - I'm getting nervous about your time frame! :)

Also, there are some gorgeous pictures of Sna77's wife's ring in this thread. She's a ring size 3.5 I believe with a 2.4ct diamond in the classic Tiffany setting. I think it looks amazing!

Very good reference, Rosebloom! They actually replaced that ring early in 2012 because it was chipped badly, and they ended up with a 2.3 ct. F VS2 (8.5mm) and set it in the Vatche U-113 in a size 3:

Raising the bar on me:) I need to make a decision!

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

Nahhh, not many of us can do one like that! I think you are fine with 2 cts. That is large by most standards so don't worry. You are fortunate your fiancee has small fingers!

Re: Clueless guy needs help--getting married on the 27th of

Not trying to influence your decision here but you did ask...

I think that in the real world it is possible to have a stone that's too large - or at least so large that some women would feel self-conscious wearing it or not wear it all the time. One of my co-workers has a lovely solitaire set with a ~2.5ct stone that I've seen only once or twice - she doesn't normally wear it to work (in a nice, safe office environment). Another has a 3-cat beauty that only comes out to play once in a blue moon. You're talking to a bunch of diamond aficionados here, most of whom would have no qualms about wearing stones in those size ranges. But - many women would consider a 2 ct stone to be large, and you're going to be giving your girlfriend an excellently cut stone that's going to look even more spectacular because of its optics. So please don't feel bad if you're leaning towards a 2 ct stone.

You know, truthfully, I think you just read my mind. I want her to want to wear it every day. We're young professionals from pretty modest backgrounds. No one in our world has giant rocks and i know 2Cish will be a show stopper. Aside from a couple of little stud earrings, this will be her first diamond.

I wish I had a picture with her hands, but here we are.
