Hi all,

The quest continues. I believe that I have found the diamond, at least it''s a contender. Anyway, I have been told that it is "eye clean" by the internet vendor. I''m considering a round ideal 0.96 carat, G color, SI1 clarity stone. Sarin report is pending. When looking at the GIA report, under the comments section it states that "clouds are not shown". How am I supposed to interpret that bit of information? Is this a good thing? I don''t see any other inclusion notations on the report.
Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hi there :) From my understanding, they put that in the report if they clouds really aren't 'visible' to the naked eye because if they drew it it may look like some huge nasty inclusion that may dissuade some people from buying it... i mean it makes sense as i would be turned off by a big red circle on my GIA report :)

Maybe some of the true experts could also chime in on this.

"Clouds not shown" would mean that the clouds did not establish the SI1 grade, and were not plotted because they were minor enough not to contribute to that grade. In other words, without the clouds the diamond would still be an SI1, so the clouds are probably VS grade characterictics, and as DrKewl pointed out, would look much worse on a diagram than they actually are.

It''s a grader''s discretion decision, trying to make the plot match the look of the stone as much as possible. They''re probably nothing to worry about.

One of the fascinating things about diamond grading is that it is ridiculously easy to diagram a VVS1 or 2 stone and can be incredibly complex to diagram a VS2 stone without making it look like an I3. Of course if you had a real I3 you might need hours to actually diagram it well, but the value is so low that it would be a real waste of time to do it. Thank GOODNESS for digital cameras which will rarely be able to see the inclusions in a VVS but can make diagraming a lower quality stone unnecessary...

LOL....You are so right, Wink!!!
the appraiser plotted my stone as a VS2.....but you''re right....the way he drew in the feather (not exactly a "feathery" pen stroke)...it looks more like a giant cleavage or something!!! It is not something I can see w/idealscope.......(I do have an I1 earring on which there is a very prominent feather I can see w/idealscope, but not w/out one!!)

Wink, did you see the way the Imagem at Dave Atlas' maps inclusions with immersion? (halfway down this page in Garry's review). The diamond's plot blow-up looks like a bug-splattered windshield.
