Cleaning the ring?

I have a question on how to properly clean my engagement ring. The band is platinum. I was told I could go to any store and get a small can of jewelry cleaner and let the ring sit in this cleaner. Will this harm the diamond or platinum? I know I can have it cleaned at my local jewelry store using steam, but I am looking for something I can do at home. Thanks.
