Works in mysterious ways..., a lot depending on the humans in the lab.!!!Date: 1/15/2008 5:06:28 PM

Hello,
I was just curious about how clarity grading system works. My ering stone is a VVS2 and on the GIA report it states that it has one pin point. I've seen a few VVS1 diamonds with 1 - 3 pin points/Needles/Cloud or feathers...?? Just curious...![]()

I the case of GIA..., your VVS2 would probably be a black VVS1 (type) pinpoint (if its based on only one pinpoint)...
There are too many factors..., just to name a few..., the size, color, location of the pinpoint..., does it reflect numerous times due to the position?
What type of shape, faceting style, the Diamond in subject is...
A VVS1 with an internal needle is a rare call!!! but remember that humans grade these Diamonds!
Clouds can be so miniscule that you wouldnt be able to see it with a 10X loupe..., but since I understand gemologists look through high powered microscopes focusing on an inclusion on a much higher enlargement (40x) only then minimizing the enlargement to 10x..., and if the inclusion disappears by the 10X they dont mark the inclusion!!!![]()

Feathers in a VVS1 is in my opinion a wrong miss-call!
Thanks for your helpful reply!!
Wow...I have a lot to learn....what''s black VVS1?
DG gave you a good answer.
To add to it.
If you try to become an expert it will take you quite a while to learn that you never stop learning.
Mostly you will learn to understand how silly the whole thing is - e.g. much of the grading is done when the diamond is backlit, but when you wear the stone it is front lit.
But then we grade colour thru the side and the top view can be very different.
