I believe you misunderstand the gift. Those books are fuel for the barbecue.... Get some good steaks and have fun (and tube steaks count in this case).

Perry

This is too funny!

I agree! Or they make great regifts--back to him next year! (and cooking lessons for him, also).

cheers--Sharon

Well this Christmas my hubby bought me a toaster. And a pair of what look like silver and labrodorite drop earrings, which are actually nice and something I'd wear. so he is getting better re: the jewelry gifts.

And he also gave each girl a bracelet, "so they will have something from the man who will always love you". Nothing expensive, but it was sweet.

I also gave my hubby practical gifts (shirt, car windshield scraper, and lights for his bike) so we are pretty much even.

Lara, I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear you lost your baby. :(( I don't check the Family forum often enough, so I missed that.

I am glad you have your new ring to look forward to in the New Year! Cookbooks for Christmas don't seem so bad when you know what is coming soon after!

thanks DS. ACtually, I don't think I posted the final outcome of my pregnancy.

I DID say we had very serious problems, and had to have lots of tests, but that was about it.
We were told to expect a miscarriage. I had to go to hospital. Everyone at the hospital was very nice, but of course there is your recovery following and the whole thing is :errrr:

So yeah, focussing on Feb. I'm trying to warm up to the camera! It's quite a fancy one.
Will try not to think about diamond jackets lol.

Okay, that was the last I remembered that there were signs of problems. I hope 2013 is a much happier year!

I'm so sorry Lara. I've had a similar experience and remember how awful I felt for several weeks afterwards. It just sucks. :(

Well, I've not had the year you had Laura (HUGS to you!), I didn't have anything to unwrap at my house today. "we" bought a cool stove (that dh had been dreaming about apparently) more than a month ago that was our present. :nono: Now, don't get me wrong, the stove is awesome, however having nothing to open (esp. when he told me what the kids could get him) on Christmas was sad for me. It wouldn't be so bad if he got me bling presents other times. With the exception of the ring he bought last year (which I gave him the website, price, size, color, style # etc), and 3 other pieces of jewelry, I've got nada. Really sucks, to go to my parents house where my dad showers mom w/jewelery (maul jewelry, but still) that she doesn't really like. Sadness.... just whining to those who understand and can relate....

A few Christmases ago my DH got me colour coded chopping boards. He had talked up his present for days before Christmas and told me how well he thought he had done picking out my gift. Talk about an anticlimax when I opened the present!
For my 30th he bought me pegs. Yep, straight from bunnings!

This year was pretty good! I got a watch (one I picked out a few weeks earlier, sent him a picture and he said no, because I was getting a necklace) :cheeky: from him. I also got a hideous necklace from mimco. In his defense, he didn't pick it out and he doesn't like it either! Ha, not sure what I am going to do with it since I don't have the tag or receipt to return it. What bugs me is it cost just as much as the watch :nono:

Lara - I can (sorta) beat you. We did NO gifts this year at all! I thought maybe I'd get a sneaky surprise gag gift or SOMETHING. But no. I got him a silly $5 present to unwrap. Every other present under the tree is for our nieces and nephew. I went a bit crazy on buying for them, so we decided not to buy for anyone else.

Aussie blokes are terrible gift buyers though. I just look my DH straight in the eyes and say, "I want X for my birthday. Buy me X (in this size, color, variation, etc) from X store. That's all I want. X. X. X. Did I mention X, in white?" Otherwise I end up with (and yes, this happened): car floor mats.

TWINSIES!!!! My ex got me car floor mats one year--he also got me new tires one year, a certificate for a tune up another, terrible clothes (unattractive, nearly mens clothing) from the sale rack at J Crew... The list goes on.

Lucky FI listens and is generally a good gift giver... Though he has fallen down on occasion... One Xmas I got a hi-def DVD player (after telling him "I DO NO WANT A DVD PLAYER") and I got a frying pan for a bday on year. Ugh!

My lovely sister currently has an Aus bf... He is terrible with birthdays and holidays. They live in Hawaii, and he went back to Aus this year--she not only didn't get a gift--she didn't even get a phone call?!?! >:(

I want her to dump him

Just read through the thread--Lara, so sorry to hear about your tough year. Nice that you've got some fancy bling to look forward to in 2013! 2012 seemed to have been a crap year for a lot of people

Lara, you should buy him a gift certificate to some cooking classes and tell him that you've got some great books you can loan him for recipe ideas.

lol :rodent:

Mine bought me a foot massager - shiatsu style, with heating option. He really thought he'd got me something I'd really like this time. Because last year, when we were at the State Fair, I made him try out the "footsie Wootsie" machines. LOL... he tried, he really did! The thing is, spending all day on my feet - as we did that day at the fair - is a fairly rare occurrence for me. I do have days when I make bad footwear choices, but... those are few and far between. So the massage machine would get very little action, if any.

We had the discussion tonight. I will be returning it.

Maybe your hubbies can get together and read recipes while they have their feet massaged... :wink2:

I might try that one.

I too, got a cookbook this year. But as I got him a 'how to bbq' book I'd say we were even. :loopy:

I'd say just hold the thought of the new diamond in your head whilst gritting your teeth.

This thread has given me a real giggle!

I have had revenge!!

I bought tanzanite earrings! =)

Will post pics in coloured stones when they arrive.

...and we in CS love earrings, especially tanzanite or anything bright and colorful! :cheeky:

Don't worry, they can learn better. My dear BF was like this as well. Gifts were just not on his radar. I told him that I expect a birthday gift and a Christmas gift. I can give him a list, if he likes, he can try on his own (but I reserve the right to return it) and I will be happy. He has become a thoughtful gift giver! This year, he gave me a lovely assortment of luxury tea (I love expensive tea but rarely buy it on my own), which may seem lame to some but it was perfect for me (bling is out of the budget, unfortunately).
