Choosing diamonds for earrings?

I am going to buy 2 carat tcw earrings and I am struggling picking diamonds. I am trying to determine what is important to me. I was looking at Blue Nile. I know you can fudge on certain components depending on the setting, etc, so I am wondering about earrings. For example, how important is color? For a ring, I wouldn't go below G on color. I just don't like warm diamonds. But will that apply to earrings? How much will color show? Cut, again on earrings will cut be less noticeable? I tried on 1.5 tcw and I guess I have small earlobes because they looked silly so size isn't an issue. 2 carat tcw is my choice there. I am thinking SI1 on clarity. What do you all thing?

Anything H, SI2 would be more than fine. As long as it is a legitimate H and a legitimate SI2 (GIA or AGS certs only). Don't go with EGL... they write anything.

In this case, I would go H/I in color, and eye clean based on what is considered "personal space". My standards for eyeclean for a ring would be creepy personal space invasion for earrings - unless it's someone who has PERMISSION to be that close to you. :naughty:

1.5 tcw looked silly
so size isn't an issue?
you're going for 2.0 tcw ?

What size individual diamonds are you actually looking for then ?

(I realize I had a bad weekend and am feeling..... not myself.
not being picky, really, but you ARE asking for advice....)

I am glad you picked up on that, too. I didn't want to be the one to ask why 1.5 would be bad on small earlobes, but 2.0 carats would be OK!

:))

I have small earlobes too, and thin.
I think 2.0 tcw studs would probably hang upside-down on me
That's why I love my hoops !!!!

I always wished I had tiny shell-like ears, but I do not. My earlobes are large and I can barely squeeze huggies onto them. I had a pair of 2.50 carat total weight studs (1.25 carats each) I used to wear on occasion, but I consigned them. The diamond from one of them sold. It is with the money from that sale that I am now buying my hoop earrings. But I did not mean to threadjack!

My point was not that 2.00 carat total weight in studs is too large in general, but that it is larger than 1.50. Therefore if small ears are a problem at 1.50 carats, presumably, one would not solve the problem by getting bigger and heavier earrings.

I thought the same thing. One of those numbers is a mistake.

I will say that cut is EXTREMELY important for earrings! You want them to show up so great cut is essential (GIA XXX or AGS Ideal cut)! I certainly think you can go down a color grade for earrings without the change being noticeable especially in well cut stones. My ring is VS1 but I get VS2 for earrings. Many go with SI clarity for earrings, though.

I will mention that there is significant savings if you look for .90 each instead of 1 ct. I'd far rather have great quality .90's over poor quality 1 ct stones. In fact, I wear .80 each (1.6 ctw) H VS2, AGS0 hearts and arrows diamonds. I'd consider going to .90 in I color.

I have I SI-1 ACA diamond studs that are 4ctw--they sparkle incredibly! I walked into a jewelry store recently and the owner thought they were actually G colored diamonds!

Oops. I mean 3 carat tcw was too big (1.5 each). Ok, so I am going to go with SI1, maybe go to H color.
