Choosing Diamond for engagement!

Sorry, the diamond Bob was mentioning was probably an Expert Selection diamond. These just miss the ACA often by a whisker and are a very popular choice, some PSers have them and love them. So one of these could be a great choice for you, possibly performing similarly to an ACA in some circumstances. ACA as said before has to conform to strict standards with the H&A pattern, the ES diamonds might have various things about them that the lay person might not ever notice, but which disqualifies them from the ACA title. If Bob is recommending one of these diamonds to you I would absolutely consider it. Polish and symmetry it is said by some experts that good and above can look the same to the untutored eye - to clarify I would say this depends on the eyes and opinions of the viewer. One of our beloved regular PSers put p and s this way once - in a well cut diamond these details will be taken care of, it is part of the craftmanship and finish of the diamond.

Ah okay. I just found another couple of maybes http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-53023.htm and http://www.jamesallen.com/diamond.asp?cid=131&item=866256

I think the MORE time I spend on this the more I will find... argh too much to think about!

I just need to stick it out for a few weeks. I''m sure no matter what I get it''ll be beautiful! (I''m encouraging myself now...) hehe

What do you guys think of these two?

a casual review makes me like the original F best, based simply on the mix of features (F & VS2), and cost.

My vote is the same as Ira's, but all of these are superbly cut diamonds which are likely to perform the same way, it is hard to choose between them, it comes down again to branded cut, Expert Selection or the ones from James Allen which are winners too. I think you could pick any of them and be very happy with them. You are certainly picking some winners Zac, now it comes down to deciding what is truly important to you. I know you so much want to get it right - but maybe when I tell you it would be almost impossible to get it wrong with the calibre of diamonds you are considering does that help?

Yes, yes, it really does help. What actually has been the smartest thing I have done in a long time... I spent an hour or two going around the local b&m stores here, and looking at local prices, and comparing diamonds! I can always spot the inclusion in SI diamonds, so I am definitely going for VS. Also, I *can* actually see the difference between the colours of diamonds. So I think I will go for a slightly better colour, with a VS clarity. Though an ACA would be nice, I think an ES or any Ideal/Excellent cut will still do us beautifully.

Most of all, comparing the prices I will be paying for the diamond with local prices... I am glad I am importing!!! It will probably work out just less than half the price of my local B&M''s...

Now it''s just down to deciding which diamond will be best... Anyone have any reccomendation for vendors? All prices seem similar, JA seems to be the cheapest by a small margin... but I liked the service from WhiteFlash - Bob was very helpful...

Almost there guys, a little more advice though!?

Thats great Zac - now you know exactly what you need to concentrate on for colour and clarity! All the PS vendors are great, other faves are:

Wink at Wink Jones
Good Old Gold
Pearlmans
Engagement Rings Direct
NiceIce

and I am sure there are some I have missed, but you know what you are looking for now for sure, your diamond will be great - one further tip - keep your emphasis on cut and verify any labels such as Ideal Cut or Premium Cut etc used by some vendors and also use the cut analysis info that they can give you to help with your selection. Almost there now, you are doing well!

Okay I just called Bob from WhiteFlash... and told him to hold the diamond for me for 24 hours. I am very keen to get this one, and though I believe I might be able to save a few dollars here or there from a different vendor, I have heard great reports of WF, and have been very impressed with Bob's service.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY REASON WHY I SHOULD CONSIDER A DIFFERENT DIAMOND OVER THIS ONE, PLEASE SAY SOMETHING NOW - AS I HAVE TO DECIDE WITHIN 24 HOURS

Please, to everyone reading this thread, even if you have held out until now just reply and let me know if you think it's an okay deal, or let me know of something else I should compare it to... I really need as much feedback as possible.

P.s. To those interested, I am going to get a local Jeweller to make the setting exactly how we want it, as he has a lifetime guarantee on his settings, and I can customise it exactly the way I want it. Either this local guy, or Garry H as a lot of you have recommended!

Still looking good to me. You could furrow your brow at this vs a modest savings for the option you''ll also see at Nice Ice, but you could also relax. WF has a very strong brand name, hence, the reasonable selection of AGS not 0, but AGS nonetheless.

You might, though, give study to navigating setting. I''d at least consider taking out a Jeweler''s Mutual policy before its set, and having your diamond & setting appraised both before and after its set. For a trifecta...consider getting Garry H to be your appraiser (but not if he''ll also supply the setting, just to follow the principle...one guy, one action). You would do this if you want to care about having your diamond insured while it is being set, since this is more routinely handled by the same vendor you buy the ring from. There ARE advantages to buying a setting local. But being safe during the setting process is not one of them. Supposedly, it''s pretty hard to damage a round, but I have no idea.

Good wishes!

Thanks Ira, good advice. Bob from WF also recommended to do just that.

Please, anyone else?

Which diamond is on hold?

That''s the one on hold... what do you think?
I like it. If Bob said it was almost an ACA, that''s good enough for me as far as cut goes. I am very color sensitive, and would definitely pick F over H. As far as the price difference and Bob''s recommendation, a friend of mine called Bob at WF when he was ready to buy (on my enthusiastic recommendation), and Bob steered him to a slightly cheaper stone than the one he had called about because Bob thought it was better.

Excellent. Thanks for all your help guys! I''ve told Bob I definitely want it - will arrange for payment as soon as I can get to the bank on Monday! Thanks Lorelei, Ira, Kay, Ellen, JulieN, and alucard - I couldn''t have settled on this diamond without your input. Now for the next fun part... getting the setting made... then planning the ENGAGEMENT.

Don''t worry, I won''t leave you in the dark... I''ll let you know how it all goes. Stay tuned :)

Superb choice Zac!!!
