I need some advice..
A few months ago my husband lost his wedding ring, so we took a trip to a well known jeweler to get him another. While we were waiting the sales associate offered to clean my 3 stone princess cut ring. I gave it to him, he came back after looking at it through the gemscope and informed me that the center stone was loose. I hadn''t noticed it previously but when he showed me the stone it wiggled about in its setting. It was clearly and significantly loose. I had them fix it (24 bucks -- not bad!) and picked it up the following day. I picked it up, signed the release and was on my way with my ring. When I got home I noticed my very well set ''n'' sturdy stone was slightly crooked. I didn''t call the jeweler (mistake), I just made a mental note to stop by the next time I was in the area. The stone was sturdy and not going to fall out of its setting so I didn''t make it a priority (mistake).
Well, that was August 13th.. I was finally "in the area" (on November 24th) and stopped by to have them straighten it out. I was ready to be charged another 24 bucks for the resetting but the asst. manager offered to have it fixed for free.
An hour later the asst. manager called me to let me know that when the jeweler took the stone out of the setting, he noticed a significant chip. Like I said, the asst manager had initially looked at the ring under the gemscope and indicated no chips. So by deduction, either the chip was very well hidden underneath a prong or it was chipped when the jeweler took it out of the setting. I asked the asst. mgr who the jeweler was who fixed it in August and if he was still employed there (as it was clear that he possibly set it slightly crooked to hide a crack he created!) Well, it just happens that he was the shop manager - and yes still employed there.
You can only imagine conversations had and unhappy words that were spoken.. but at the end of it all, the asst. manager said it was my fault - that I had probably hit the ring on something hard. She also noted that it was very fishy that I hadn''t called or brought it in earlier - which I admit, baaaad move. I finally got her to admit that it was possible that it happened while under their care... and at that time that was all I needed to hear and I would''ve walked away with my shiny clean re-centered chipped ring. Thankfully I read some posts and called my insurance company. They only replace if a diamond is lost, but in this case.. the chip is significant and the ring is not 100% as sturdy as it was before the multiple prong manipulations and crack.. so my insurance agent is calling the next person up in his company and see where to go from here.
Sorry the post is so long -- I''m a first timer and don''t want to miss details!
Something to consider: if I had in fact bumped it so hard (between August and now) as to make the diamond crooked, wouldn''t it have loosened out of the setting?? The setting was still extremely firm, and I could not see any chips.. Like many other women who are posting about similar situations, I am sick to my stomach!! I hope the insurance companies work it out.. any suggestions or opinions or questions?? please help!
