Just after a word of advice really & you ladies know everything about diamonds :sun:

My replacement engagement ring is a pear cut solitaire, which is currently having a new setting made - I have another thread in Rocky Talk about it.

Anyway, the diamond was graded D colour & VS2 clarity by 2 independent inspections. The ONLY flaw was a slight tiny feathering on one edge, right up at the top on the table edge towards the point. Now I am absolutely not hard on my jewellery in ANY way. My ring has just been in the cleaner, the sun was shining & I was admiring it. I have a 30x loupe & decided to have a closer look, and..... The feathering is gone & there is a teeny chip in the edge of the diamond

I cannot see any further flaws, fractures or carbon, so my question is do I pretend the chip isn't there seeing as its invisible to the naked eye, or might there be further repercussions & weakness, and therefore I should tell my husband?? He will go MENTAL. This ring was to replace my pressure set princess diamond cluster, that my 3 year old flung onto a slate floor & one of the diamonds cracked against another one. The insurer wrote it off & said the setting was too vulnerable for an everyday engagement ring & the repair would only weaken it further. So now I have a gorgeous 1.02 carat pear... With a chip missing

If any pro's out there can reassure me it will be fine, I shall keep my trap shut. My other rather naughty option, was to pretend to notice it once the stone has been removed from this setting & installed in the new ring. Oops - the jeweller chipped it??? HELP! I feel sick with worry

These things happen. Diamonds are not indestructible. That chip could have happened at any time at all. I am more concerned about your husband's possible (over)reaction. :errrr: I would take the ring to a jeweler, make sure that it is structurally sound, and keep wearing it. Or perhaps send it off to BGD or the like to get it repolished. If it is a tiny chip, it is an easy fix.

This is really not something to feel sick over, I promise.

I'd send the diamond somewhere to get the chip polished out. If the chip poses any structural concerns, the cutter would tell you. I would resolve it before setting the stone and certainly would not place blame on someone who had nothing to do with it. But if you can't see it without using a 30x loupe, it must be pretty tiny! I'd just want to be certain the crack would not spread since there was a feather there.

Thank you so much for your quick replies. And yes, very wrong of me to suggest blaming someone else & I wouldn't have actually done that, I promise. Just in a bit of panic about it. Will take it to the jeweller on Wednesday when I'm out & check if all looks to be sound. Fingers crossed. My husband would have been cross as he very generously matched the insurance money from my original ring to enable me to get something so pretty. And just after my daughter damaged my original ring, I dropped my full eternity whilst taking it off to wash up & it got mis-shaped & went slightly oval  Thankfully it was only a slight issue & my jeweller reshaped it & checked the claws, diamonds etc & there were no further problems. But all this has only happened since April this year! He says for someone who covets diamonds so much, I'm a bit clumsy with them. Which is true I guess :(sad

Thanks again :))

Alex, I think you should not feel bad about chipping or dropping your rings. Wedding rings and engagement rings are items we wear every day, they are bound to sustain some damage. And as justginger said, diamonds can get damaged, it happens. If you know that you tend to be clumsy with your rings, or use your hands a lot (or, like me, tend to somehow smash your hand on every possible doorway, doorknob, etc), you may want to consider getting a very protective setting, like a simple bezel setting. Another option is not to wear your nicer rings while you are in the house, only wear them out. A lot of Pricescopers take off their rings as soon as they get home and put them away safely. It will let you relax more too, with some piece of mind.

Good luck with the chip! Hope it's not a big deal for your new pretty stone.

Thank you Gemfever. I also bash my hands against everything possible & yet in every other way I am not a clumsy person

The chip is SO teeny that it cannot be seen with the eye, but it looks like somebody has been quarrying there under the loupe!

And so thank you ladies, you have relaxed me & put me completely at ease. The panic is gone & I don't think it will be necessary to tell hubby :)) I didn't realise that diamonds could chip like that & have obviously always been told its the hardest substance on earth, so for me to have had two damaged ones in less than 7 months feels pretty damn unlucky

My new setting should be ready in about 2 weeks, at which point I shall courier my pear back to them for the re-setting. As soon as its all back & looking gorgeous I shall post in SMTB. And HOPEFULLY you'll never be able to spot the chip :sun:

Alex :)
