I have a beautiful .87 asscher cut center stone in a Beverly k platinum setting. I have had this ring for 9 years. Last week I noticed the stone was chipped along one side, its a pretty deep chip. We have insurance through jewelers mutual, we have filed a claim and they will cover a new stone. My question is, I would like to buy my damaged stone and make it into a necklace...mostly for sentimental reasons. My jeweler who I love and trust insists he would have it recut versus setting it into a bezel to hide the chip. The damage is along the side and not noticeable from the top. I was wondering how much carat weight I would potentially lose, he estimated around 15 percent....what the cost would be to me and what the risks/benefits to doing this are. I am in ny area ( Hudson valley) and wondering what my options are for diamond cutters in my area.

That's a complicated question that can vary a LOT depending on the details. My usual rule is that if you're happy with it, you're not trying to buy or sell it, and it's not at risk of increasing damage from additional wear, leave it alone. It's worth noting that JM, as well as any other insurer with sense, won't agree to insure an already damaged stone.

I'd contact Jonathan at Good Old Gold to ask about a recut. I wouldn't send it to an unknown cutter. He has sourced some beautiful asschers and knows who the best cutters are. But I would recut, personally, as the chip would bother me.

A master step cut cutter may be able to fix the chip into an extra facet or otherwise fix it without a full recut.
GOG and Yoram sell/cut my Octavia so im more than a little biased but I would have Jon @ gog do a helium scan and take pics and send them to Yoram for an opinion.
This would not be the cheapest option for a fix but you would be getting the services of in my opinion the best step cut cutter in the world.
