my rings haven''t looked this nice in years. I think I will have them repolished every 6 months or so from now on.

This ring belonged to my grandmother. It was cut off her hand in the hospital. The diamond obviously is chipped. Is there anything anyone would suggest? Is it worth re-cutting?

I have some more pictures that I will post later. I can''t figure out how to post more than one at a time.

What are the measurements as per my drawings?

Would help to know the depth...
I should receive the appraisal in the next week or so on the recut. If he follows his usual format, I should be able to answer your question at that time.

Your jeweler appears to have done a really nice job for you. Stick around PS and you will become anal about your rings. I carry a loupe, H&A viewer and cleaning cloth with me at all times.

Congrats!

Thank you. We are very pleased. But perhaps even more importantly, I think my father is very pleased that his mother''s ring is being worn.

Just for reference for anyone contemplating having a damaged stone re-cut, here are the basic details:

Shape: OEC/Mine Cut/Transitional - we are told its really not any of those, but rather a product of a time when a lot of experimenting was being done. It is not "round". Its been described as a "roval".

Original Size: estimated at 1.07ct

Recut size: .796ct

Recuting cost: ~$200
Other repairs (e.g., replace prongs, re-seat sidestones, polish and plate: ~$200

It was intentionally cut to maximize the balance between light performance and weight. I gave our jeweler discretion to pick the right balance when he contacted the cutter, but told him that I liked the idea of respecting its original character and didn''t especially care about getting a modern RB. He shared that sentiment. Had it been cut to ideal modern standards, it probably would have ended up in the low .60''s in ct weight.

My wife''s been wearing the ring on the same (right hand) finger as the sapphire/diamond ring. Although I think we both had our reservations initially about wearing them that way, I have to admit, I think they look great together.

I''ll post some hand shots later. When I get the appraisal, I post that info too.

I realize that your question may have been directed to answering my original question about whether it was worth re-cutting. After re-cutting, the diamond is 5.75x5.78x3.57. I''m sorry, but I don''t know what it was before it was re-cut. I realize that this is probably what you wanted.

I picked up the appraisal today. Just for the record, here are the rest of the specs from the appraisal.

2 marquis side stones, each ~4.5x2.0, each approx 8pts. GH/VS. Center stone is .794ct I/vs2. Appraised value, $4,800.

WOW. I''ve been following this thread and, I''ll admit, held out no hope at all - the chip looked really bad. But the cutting is spectacular - you''d never dream the stone had ever looked any different. And for $200.?????????? I was thinking a thousand at least - you see how very much I know about all this - NOT.
Incredible, and the replating and setting of the side stones was perfect - what a truly gorgeous ring!

I''m so glad you kept the integrity of the original cut of the stone! It looks lovely and appears to have renewed life...!

If your wife decides she wants to change the other band, you could always make two eternity bands, one all sapphire baguettes set horizontally, and one of diamonds only. Just a suggestion as they could end up being two ring guards for either side of that wonderful antique ring! Enjoy it.

Wow, what a beautiful makeover!!! Your rings look brand new now and the re-cut turned out so beautifully.

After having the saph/diamond ring cleaned and replated, it looks great. She''s wearing it on the same finger as the recut ring and they look really nice together. I''ve asked her if she wants one for the other side of the recut, but she''s convinved it would be too much or wouldn''t fit on her finger.

Thank you. We've been hugely pleased through the process. Actually, I think the recut fee was slightly less than $200, but I'm not sure as we had a bunch of work done at the same time. It definitely wasn't more. Our jewler charged us the cutter's rate +10% + shipping for the recut fee.

ETA: The above in reply to needsmorediamonds.
