Hi guys,

Please help!!!

I'm about to make a purchase but do not want to make a mistake. The AGS cert is attached below. This rock from a local vendor has a tiny little chip blemish in the bottom right corner. Will it effect the durability of the diamond? Will the corner be prone to chipping/breaking? Really need expert advice and help if it would be wise to move on to another stone or it would be okay to go forward with it? If you have any experience with stones with similar blemishes or know if it will be fine or not, please let me know. Would like to avoid making a mistake!

Thanks so much

The delicate corners of a princess cut are very prone to breaking and chipping. As far as it being a future risk, I think the best person to answer that for you would be an independent appraiser who could view the stone for you and tell you if the chip is small enough and located in an area where a prong could protect it from further damage, or if the chip is likely to spread to a much larger crack if you band it just right. For me personally, I wouldn't consider a princess cut with a pre-existing chip, it's no longer 'mind clean' to me and I would worry anytime I hit the ring on something, that itself takes a lot of the joy of wearing it away.

If you think that you can live it then I would make the sale contingent on an independent appraisers thoughts. Ask them to send the stone to an appraiser of YOUR choosing and if after speaking to this appraiser you still feel comfortable with the stone, then move ahead with the purchase.

BTW, how do you plan on setting the stone? Classic solitaire? bezel? halo?

eta: Oh, and if you do move ahead with the sale, then I would be absolutely sure to carry insurance on it. This goes for any stone, but it will go a long way in offering you piece of mind and it's relatively inexpensive.
