hi...just wondering: is it possible to chip a mounted diamond (4 prong setting) in the pavillion below the girdle? Thanks!

Possibly - what''s the shape and size of the stone?

Why do you thinks it''s chipped?

Does it have a grading certificate with plotted inclusions? That way it would be easier to check post-grading changes.

You can chip or partially chip the culet on a mounted diamond. Other than that, you can''t chip the pavilion without chipping into the girdle Sometimes a diamond may have a natural hole or cavity on the pavilion only, but not a chip. I don''t think you can chip the pavilion without either chipping into the culet or into the girdle plane.

Culet chips on mounted diamonds generally happen when a diamond, only one set low in a setting, has its culet hit the steel of a a ring mandrel and then a piece of the diamond at the culet snaps off.

I have seen several people think their diamond was broken after setting, when they were able to see some sort of prong reflection in the pavilion when looking through the side of the diamond. To them it looked like a break, but it wasn''t.
