I still have not had the time to get a setting for my marquise but do know I am not too fond of those triangle shaped prongs called chevrons often used to cover the points of fancy cuts.

I want to know if these Chevrons are really superior vs a regular prong which I see being used as well for stones with points?

I''d want the chevron to make sure the two points of the diamond were adequately protected. JMO

I would say it depends how tough you are known to be on your rings. The V-prong or chevron as you say is much better in protecting any stone with points (Princess, marquise, pear and heart). A single prong is not as protective and if done incorrectly on a princess cut, the stone can easily shift in the mounting.

If you are gentle on rings, then go with the style you prefer. Just be sure to have it checked after a good whack.

(Just make sure it''s not your fiance'' on the receiving end

I don''t like the look of v-tip prongs either. So, I got a setting with double prongs!!! It offers greater protection of the points (as compared to standard prong settings), but doesn''t have that hard metal look of v-tips/chevrons

Have you considered getting a setting with pave diamonds?

Wow good answers- double prongs, interesting option, and a pave setting? Hmm how would a pave setting help protect the points??

I was wondering the same thing...My wax is currently being made for my marquise and I am also trying to decide what type of prongs to use. I don''t usually mind chevrons as long as they are not huge/obtrusive. I don''t know what to do.

Is this the one you are referring to Jazmine?

Yes, thank you.

You can talk to your jeweler about how they set the prongs. I don''t like that pinched look, I want my v-prong to melt along the curves rather than be pinched into a point. Maybe that is what you object to also?

yes I think you are right lumpkin. Maybe a little tweak in the size and pointyness of them would make them more appealing. Thanks alot you guys!

I love the double prong idea!

I also didn''t care for the v prongs and planned to go with single prong tips until I got a good look at the actual head (crown) choices available. Overall the look of the v tip was more pleasing and fluid looking than the 6 prong for a marquise. My jeweler surprised me with the way he angled the v''s by creating a 45 degree angle up to the v point tip. The tips actually angle down to the table of the diamond, it seems to be less dangerous or sharp at the ends. I love the side profile of the setting and when I get another digital I''ll post.

I wasn''t a fan of chevron prongs either until I had my pear shaped diamond set. The jeweler talked me into it for better protection of the tip. He filed the chevron down to be almost flush with the top of the diamond, it barely overlaps at all and I can hardly tell. I really like the way he did it.

Pearcrazy - got a picture of that?

I don''t have a v tip on the point of my pear but it''s surrounded by a halo, so if I knock it, there''s several mm of solid ring before you''d ever encounter the main stone. I never liked the look of v tips but I definitely know they''re much more protective. Any way to diminish the way they look would be great in my book!
