Changing size of fitting

Hi,
I was wondering how difficult or expensive it is to change the ring size of a solitaire diamond engagement ring. For example, if I buy a diamond with a 6-prong platinum setting and it doesn''t fit my fiance''s finger, is it a big deal to have the size changed? It''s a long story as to why I don''t know her size exactly right now. I''m trying to get the information but I don''t think it''s going to be very reliable.

I think it''s fairly easy to size a ring. The quickest way to do it is to go to a jeweler where there''s a full-time jeweler that can do metal work (hopefully this is the case where you got the ring). I have to get mine sized down, and my jeweler said it''ll take about 10 days (!!!) because they have to ship it to a person who does the sizing. That''s really long I know, and I also know that it only takes like 2 hours at the actual jewelers building in Boston. Hopefully it''ll be less time for you, because it''s so sad for a girl to be w/out her ering! In the meantime, there''s temporary ways to size down rings if it''s loose on her...I just got Snugglies (per another P-scoper''s advice) which are plastic tubes that go arond the bottom of the ring and make it temporarily smaller w/out scratching the ring. Usually it''s pretty easy. There may be some issues with designs and stones that extend down the shank and other structural type topics but for the ''typical'' type setting it is no problem. Expect to spend anywhere from $20-$50 depending on whether you''re going up or down, the width of the shank and other such things. Many jewelers are prepared to do this while you wait although it''s not uncommon to charge an extra fee for this kind of service. As mentioned above, choose a store with an in-house shop and ask them. Most will do this type job many times per day.

I think, then, that I will go ahead with my best guess of her ring size and if it doesn''t fit then we can go and have it changed for a small fee compared to the price of the whole ring. And some stores, according to your reply, may do this while we wait. Great, thanks for your help!

Estimate to the big side. It always makes a woman feel better to have it be too big than to have it be too small.
