(First things first... I have already tried googling this for over 30 minutes, and can't find any answers. )

I do not have a smart phone, nor do I really want one... However, I am looking at purchasing a car, and in order to use the hands free phone in the dash, I would need a phone that is bluetooth enabled.

Do you have to have a smartphone in order to be bluetooth enabled? I am trying to avoid having to pay the extra $30/month to my cell provider.

DH (who is very smart) says that most new cell phones have blue tooth, but ask specifically for it, since there are so many phones out there. It's the same feature that enables people to use those (annoying) little headset things when they walk around. Blue tooth is not exclusive to smart phones.

I only have to use google when my DH is unavailable :D

Thanks Ilander!

ilander is right. it's not only smartphones that are bluetooth enabled. my mom has a 2 year old basic sony slider phone that syncs to her car's handsfree speaker system.

now do you need to know if your phone is bluetooth enabled? i can try to help you with that, if you want.

p.s. YAY :appl: :appl: for new car--that's fun!!

You should be able to check if you have Blue Tooth capabilities on your cell phone. It would probably be under Settings/Tools.

I have Bluetooth in my car and I love it! But it is best if you call out the phone number you are calling instead of the name because it never seems to work (for me at least).

Most cellphones these days have bluetooth - I used it all the time on my last phone, which is now 4 years old (and was not a smartphone). Just make sure you ask about bluetooth or read the phone descriptions carefully as the super cheap models may not have it.

Thanks guys!

Lulu- I'm really hoping we get this car. I need the number to be a certain amount, and if they give it to me, it will be ours!
Socool- I looked uner Settings/Tools and there it was, all I had to do was turn it on! Thanks! Also, thanks for the tip re: calling it out... the car we are looking at will link to your phone and transfers your contacts to the car, so you can scroll thru or just say the name of the person you want to call. It's my dream car!
Thanks El. I am going to go into the store today, to make sure there aren't any extra charges for having it turned on!

No extra charges - the phone company won't know whether you use the bluetooth feature or not. It's basically just a system to connect wireless headsets and things, so not something they regulate.

keeping my fingers crossed for you meresal! hope you get the car too :)
