My anxiety and OCD have gotten so bad that my therapist and psychiatrist have recommended that I start a regimen of CBD oil. I should also add that my husband and friends also recommended that I get some kind of edible because I have been so anxious. Basically, my entire circle has said this is necessary. I have a Valium and ambien prescription but I am too anxious to take them because I don’t want to get addicted. I’ve decided that CBD will probably be a better alternative. I called a dispensary yesterday and asked about products that will help with my type of anxiety but that won’t get me high, she recommended various items but said that with my level of anxiety, they might not help. She said that I would probably need something stronger.

I used to smoke pot in my twenties. I don’t want to go back into that haze again.

Can any of you share your experiences with CBD oil and Medical Marijuana? What do you use? Is it working? How does it make you feel?

Well, I have only a tiny bit of experience so far. All cannabis products are legal where I live. I don't need a prescription, and I order online from the gov't source. I have tried capsules and chocolate. I prefer the capsules.

The reason I started trying them was because last weekend I put out my back and it's been horrendous all week long. The pills relax me. That's all. Now I haven't used them much, but that's my takeaway. I'm able to sleep. Because I use them at night, I don't have any side effects. I don't know how it would be during the day. Also, the capsules also contain THC. I don't get "high", just tired. YMMV.

Edibles are a pretty good supplement to regular meds, and you ONLY need about a pinky-nail sized amount of whatever they’re giving you. The first time I tried it out I was totally functional, not stoned, just kind of not fixating on my anxiety.Try an indica/sativa hybrid, and only a little bit. CBD seems to be for your run of the mill “My work is busy” stress but not chronic anxiety that causes panic attacks.

I understand not wanting to feel like you are chemically or emotionally dependent on Valium and ambien.
Did the lady you spoke with get into detailed questions and answers or was she quick?
Vaping some oils will give a very short high that those same oils wont do sublingually.
Unfortunately it might be an experimental road for you to find the right combo of product, dose, and method that gives you relief without the haze that sometimes is wanted by some people with recreational use.
Have another detailed convo with a worker there?
Would you entertain low dose of Valium/ambien as a immediate help to transition from a moderate state of THC relief need, rather than trying to manage from a high state of THC relief need?

Best wishes

I should have also stated earlier that I got relief from the lowest dose possible. Our stuff is highly controlled by the gov't, and the website is extremely helpful and provides tons of information of what everything means. Too much info for me actually--I got my daughter to choose. She's almost 30, no big deal.

If you go the CBD oil route, go up very slowly in drops ie. Take 3 drops, stay there for a few days. Not enough? Try 1 drop more for a few days. It takes a few days for the new dose to register.

So sorry to hear about your anxiety. I have it too and get it. Thinking about you and hoping this helps.

I use cbd from Uncanny Wellness. It's a powder that's water soluble, and apparently you absorb more of it that way than with the oil. It's tested for the actual amount of cbd. There is also cbd flower that you can smoke or vaporize from Aspen Valley and a few other places. I haven't tried it yet, but I might. If none of those help. You can also look for high cbd/low thc edibles and flower. My personal use is that I get high four nights a week, and take 30 mg of cbd on the other days. It definitely helps with my anxiety, but of course our anxiety levels are different.

It’s working. I’m amazed. With all of the psych meds I’ve gone through, I’m used to having medications fail me. I approached this with the same attitude, skeptical optimism.

The sleep oil I bought made me high and actually gave me “the fear.” I had the reduce the dose significantly from the recommended amount. It doesn’t work as well as ambien, but considering I’m going straight from two months of taking ambien to taking this and I”m actually able to sleep, I would say this is pretty good.

The gummies are really strong too. I ate a half of one and took a nap. The interesting thing about that is I have been too anxious to take a nap for years. It was lovely.

My daytime oil, the 20:1 just makes me feel like I used to before the event that made my anxiety a permanent fixture in my life. My husband and son went hunting yesterday. I didn’t worry about them at all. I usually wring my hands while visualizing every accident that can possibly happen until they get home. This is a huge improvement!

@House Cat That's great news! I'm glad it's working for you. I'm still experimenting with dosages and what do you call it? Percentages of this and that. But it does help with sleep when I'm in pain. Doesn't help with pain, just relaxes me.

I had a migraine coming on and it took it away. When it wore off at around 3pm, the migraine tried to come back. I just took more and it worked. That was the 20:1 mix.

I was always told that THC was good for pain. Do you try the products with more THC?

I don't know really. I have 2.5 mg and 5.0 mg capsules of THC + CBD. This is all new to me. I prefer capsules. I let my daughter try to figure it out as she has infinite patience and I do not. I've only just started this past week. I will say, it's pretty expensive. Some is $1 a capsule. Some is .50$ a capsule. It seems like there are tons of variations too. Also, my husband doesn't approve. Pfft. I'm in so much prolonged pain!

Glad to hear it works for you!! Is the 20:1 a ratio of cbd:thc? I also have severe anxiety, but didnt have luck when I tried cbd a few years ago.

Was great that you got some relief. THC does work for pain and migraines but you have to find the right dose for you (personally). I'm on medical and I do both. and have over quite some time amassed quite the little collection  :cool2: I do best on 1:1 but its tailored to the time of day. plus, getting my hormonal profile right is also a huge step in the right direction (I don't have to take as much as I used to in other words)

CBD was a bust for me. I was allergic to it.

sorry to hear it! what type of reaction did you get? I stay away from anything that has artificial or added flavorings which is much more of an issue for me.

There weren’t any flavorings or colorings. I think it had to do with the pollen. This is going to sound weird but when I looked up this symptom, it was there....every time I took it, I would have bladder symptoms, pain and urgency. I took a Benadryl for a few nights and discontinued the CBD and the symptoms subsided.

Does anyone who takes either of these things have experience with it helping spine and nerve pain? Do you think it would help? I know nothing of these and can't get medical mj in my state but can drive across the border. Do they fog your brain or make you lazy, for lack of a better word?

You'd be fine with CBD, but you'd want to titrate up and take in the evening to assess. I use THC and a CBD from MM, but if you don't have a card, you'll have to go with CBD from Hemp. CBD does not put me to sleep, I can take during the day and work on it. It does not relieve all my pain helps it to subside without making me loopy. THC is another story altogether! If I'm taking that, I will not be able to work, but it gets rid of all the pain.

Neither has ever given me the munchies...lol My husband tried mine and OMG never again (he would not stop eating...lol) He will not do high dose THC, he smoked his fill in his 20's and 30's...lol

I went here https://cbdforthepeople.com/ and got some for my dog. Intense thunder storms, and fireworks makes her a handful to deal with. Plus now that she's in physical therapy, the vet and I decided its best to give to her instead of some of the garbage pain meds (she does very well on it!)

I did try it. I got unflavored and to me its very mellow (but I'm used to the taste)

On CBD, you can vape it. It gets in the system quicker. However its also gone quicker. You may want to consider a tincture (unflavored is best, add your own flavor), which means it works slower but lasts longer. I sometimes double dose (vape and take tincture) which if the pain is intense, its what you have to do to cover yourself.

Depending on the state, you may not be able to go to a MM dispensary if thats all the state has. If the state dispenses for recreation you'd probably be just fine(the worry is what would happen when back in your home state)

If thats a worry, stick to hemp based cbd.

@House Cat wow, thats awful! sorry you had to deal with that.

Thank you @Arcadian for all this information! I am bit nervous about things that would be illegal in Idaho. My pain can be pretty intense though and I don't do narcotics. In fact I still have some left from the kidney stone a couple weeks ago. I think WA is a recreational state but will have to check.

My DH uses cannabis for pain in his spine from an odd form of arthritis which affects nerves, etc. He's only just started using it. He tried sublingual CBD oil (from cannabis) which didn't seem to help him. He's currently vaporizing cannabis that's a 1:1 ratio. This definitely helps him. He's not sure of the mechanism but tells me he's able to relax because the muscles relax, and then the nerves calm down. This, instead of weapons-grade prescription pharmaceuticals. He has said that the next stuff he tries will be a higher THC to CBD ratio because he feels this 1:1 isn't quite strong enough.

It doesn't appear to make his brain/mind foggy. I can't speak to the "laziness" aspect as he only takes it right before bed because it also helps him to sleep.

What I observe is that when he takes it, he sleeps right through the night rather than getting up/waking up multiple times. The next day he will also be more refreshed and relaxed, physically. It doesn't seem to affect his aptitude for accomplishing his lists of self-imposed to-do's. My DH is a type A personality who loves to be (or feel) highly productive.

This is helpful too. Thank you. My pain is worse during the night because I am so tense. The tenseness causes my right leg to have charlie horse spasms on the back of my thigh. Neurologist has said it is muscle related when that happens. All of this makes sleep difficult.

You’re welcome. I forgot—DH also uses an ointment with a higher THC to CBD ratio. This helps when he has sore muscles that feel like they’re cramping. He uses this in daytime occasionally and there is zero psychotropic effect.

1:1 ratio is the strongest CBD:THC combo. It’s one part CBD to one part THC. The first number is CBD and the second is THC. The 8:1 would be 8 parts CBD to 1 part thc. It’s weaker in the THC portion which is also what is used for pain.

Plain CBD never helped for my nerve pain in my back. When it was combined with THC, it helped some but I never took a high ratio because I didn’t want to feel high. I don’t like losing control of myself.

@redwood66 I am so sorry to read of your nerve pain. I too had terrible nerve pain and eventually had to undergo spinal surgery (cervical fusion with a harms cage) because, to be totally truthful, IMO nothing really helps nerve pain. Not even marijuana. Perhaps you could try a Gabapentin type of nerve blocker med. That didn’t work for me either. Feel free to email me and I’d be happy to discuss. Be well.

I take capsules only at night, because they relax me and make me tired. I've been thinking of asking my rheumatologist if prescription MM might be better, I'll ask in November. Generally speaking, people with my disorder don't get much pain relief from mj, just muscle relaxation, which helps. I take a biologic for reduction of pain which is caused from inflammation of the joints in ankylosing spondylitis. Maybe MM is better?

Gabapentin worked for me for quite a while. There was a one to two week adjustment period where i felt kind of dizzy, but other than that no other side effects

I know they use cymbalta for nerve pain too.

@lyra That's a tough path for you. I can relate to your situation—DH was diagnosed with AS quite a few years ago. He was on a biologic (as well as other meds for quite a little cocktail mix!) up until about three years ago. He had to go off the biologic and is on a different med combo, now. He does find that cannabis helps with pain, and although it doesn't completely eliminate it, it greatly reduces it. He takes cannabis only when his pain level spikes. I'm curious to see what he might feel like if he took it on a regular, daily basis. He prefers to keep it in reserve for the nasty flares.

@SparklieBug I had a feeling maybe he was dealing with AS too when you mentioned weird type of arthritis. I had never heard of it before getting diagnosed about 6ish years ago. Remicade + methotrexate are still working well for me. Humira stopped working almost immediately.

I still need help sometimes. Sleeping has been hard lately. I'm glad your DH found something to help.
