As this is my first post, I have to say thanks for all the great info. Unlike all too many other forums, the personal attacks and pointless criticism seems nonexistent here; nothing but honest input.
I'm in the market for a white gold cathedral setting ring for my gf of nearly 5 years. Yes, I think it's time too.
I found one at a local custom jeweler, who I've heard nothing but praise about from friends/past customers, but have a question.
On the inside of the ring, underneath the cathedral "basket" (sorry for the non-tech term), some of the white gold was "melted" away in a line, like a trench. The trench was about 1/2 the depth of the ring at that point, and didn't extend beyond the cathedral basket. It was as if a soldering iron had been used to remove solder. It isn't noticeable at all when the ring is on, but is visible when looking "into" the backside of the ring when it's off.
The rest of the ring was beautiful, w/ the thickness proportions she wants.
My question is, what's this "trench" for? I'm guessing it's to reduce the amount of gold in the ring, thus the $. If so, is this "normal"? Is this a "cheap" ring, even if it is from a reportedly reputable custom jeweler?
Any input is greatly appreciated!
