OK, I'm buying the third diamond in my life and trying to make an educated decision!

My thoughts were going in to get around 1ct with good value in a stone that to the naked eye would be clean and sparkly. That's fairly broad right?

Anyway, after spending many hours on the web reading and shopping, I broke down and dropped into a local Jeweler just to see some stones in person. I was shown 3 stones matching what I asked for and was struck by one. I need to shop more but this is my starting point as a reference.

1.23ct, EGL Very Good cut, SI3 measuring 6.95x 6.90 x 4.17mm
Table 60%, depth 60.2%, crown angle 31.5, pavilion angle 40.9
Polish VG, Symmetry VG
it through the HCA calculator tool at 1.7 (VG,EX,VG,EX)

I have a copy of the EGL USA report from June of this year, The SI3 clarity probably puts it in a fairly flawed category but the inclusion is what I would describe as a bubble outside or near the edge of the table that I could easily see under 10 power but clean to my eye at least. I' guessing maybe as wide as a facet but thin....poor description I'm sure.

I'm looking for a very simple 4 prong setting in white gold and the jeweler offered this up for $4700 mounted, out the door including tax. I can find several stones with about the same stats with SI2 in the $3500 to $8000 on various web sites, I'm near Atlanta I'm considering Union Diamond's retail store along with Soloman Brothers, maybe Shane Co. Should I get away from the 60/60 that I liked, maybe because it looks larger?

I'm already beginning to burn out and would like to make a purchase and move on but would like to think I made an informed purchase!

Comments, suggestions? I'm already starting to burn out on the shopping experience

Hi 3rd,
Welcome to PS
You never mentioned the color given by EGL.
First, it's important that you understand that EGL grading is not recognized by dealers or cutters- another way of saying EGL grading is well known not to be on par with GIA grading.
This makes comparing prices impossible, given the inconsistencies of EGL grading.
Not to say that the diamond is necessarily either a bad stone - or a bad deal ( nothing inherently wrong with 60/60) but as a professional, I feel it's very important for consumers to understand how diamond grading reports work.
Did the seller mention anything about lab reports- and GIA?

An EGL SI3? Whoa....

I know it is hard to not get excited while holding what you perceive to be a beautiful stone in your hand. As an owner of diamond studs by EGL I can assure you that they are at least 1-2 color grades and 1-2 clarity grades lower than they would be if GIA graded. So starting out with EGL certified stones that are S13 (which incidentally is only recognized by EGL all other certificates would call this stone I1 ). I would be very cautious and honestly.

Trust the people on PS and don't be in a rush .....

Unless you are a gemologist or knowledgeable regarding pricing of diamonds, I would stay away from other lab reported
diamonds other than GIA or AGS where price comparisons for those diamonds are more feasible.

If I was a gemologist or a person with knowledge in pricing, I would low ball the dealer all the way down to near cost, but then at that point there is no incentive for the dealer to sell me that diamond. Maybe buying diamonds used is a more cost efficient method for me  But then DW may not be happy.

Thanks for the feedback, I was aware and the jeweler was fairly honest with the EGL grading practices, he suggested the lab in LA was the only one he would consider. He did say that GIA was taking as much as eight weeks turnaround to grade stones, that may not be accurate?

I think I will move on to another store with a larger selection. The reviews for his store were horrible after the sale for not keeping promises. A buddy of mine suggested Salomon Bros for a local retail store to check out stones.
