Can a blemish that wasn''t apparent suddenly appear? I bought a engagement ring and looked at it through a jewellers loupe there where only minor blemishes, after a week my fiance noticed a large black mark. Now 6 months later it looks like another is appearing in the stone too??? How or why is this possible>>or is it??

If this was an emerald with shoddy fracture filling I would understand, but a diamond? No idea... and it does not help that I can't see what you see.

If a professional cleaning does not help and there are no noticeable scratches on the setting that could reflect around, I am running out of ideas.

Thank you for the reply. The funny part is that the first time we had it sized and the second time we had to get a loose stone replaced. I just wondered if blemishes could appear without someone actually changeing the stone.

No, and I bet the stone is the same.

If the ring was worked on, it sounds like those could be traces from soldering or polishing that should clean away.

As Ana said little bits of polishing compound on the diamond can do this and be very stubborn to get off.
I was at a store the other day and a customer was very upset that another jeweler had switched diamonds on her because she was seeing inclusions in a vs1 stone without a loupe.
30 min and a good cleaning later she walked out smiling because her diamond was visible "inclusion" free again.
Talking to the jeweler he says he runs into stuff like that a few times a month and usually its the same place that does the crappy job cleaning the rings after working on them.

Sometimes you can see a reflection of the prong in the diamond. But I'd be willing to bet it's a bit of polishing compound. Have it steam cleaned at the jewelers.
