Can someone please tell me which one is better platinum or white gold. I know that white gold is much cheaper but is there really a difference between the two? i''m desperately looking for a setting, can anyone recommend somewhere to look in NYC?
I would go to a local store and check both types out. Each metal has its advantages/disadvantages, but you might think one looks or feels better than the other in person.
I'm searching for a setting as well, and I know that everybody avoids the diamond district on 47th street like the plague, but, I found a place that SEEMS to be decent. There is always a crowd in there! You can check them out at www.shenoa.com
You can get an idea of what you like by window shopping!
My spouse and I have platinum settings. Platinum gets too dull and looking like sterling silver after some wear. I heard that if some other metal is added to it, it can look and stay shinier. I don't know about white gold as I don't have any. My 2cent worth...don't get platinum settings. It's good to have platinum prongs, but not the entire setting.
platinum or white gold -- consider what you're going to be doing for your wedding bands, that may help you pick one or the other.
my girlfriend just took my setting shopping, and we went all over 47th street; those stores are best to avoid unless you know EXACTLY what you want. For setting ideas, we went to Fortunoff, Tiffany, and Michael C. Fina. Michael C. Fina was our last stop, but I cannot recommend them strongly enough! I thought they just did china settings, but they have a ton of engagement and wedding band setting (two floors!). The saleswoman we spoke with was super nice and informative, she let me try on everything, no problem at all! (plus, most of their display rings seem to be about a size 7, which is great if you wear an 8 like I do! I couldn't get the display rings at Fortunoff past my knuckle!) They have a wide array of designers and styles, from traditional to super-modern, and their prices were reasonable (for NYC/designer).
I also recommend that you try on everything, especially when the salesperson suggests it, and even if you sorta cringe when you first look at it -- i ended up loving a setting that i never liked on first-sight before, and the setting that i had liked (a Tacori) ended up looking horribly fake on my hand!
michael c. fina is on the corner of 45th and 5th avenue, so you can easly walk up to fortunoff and tiffany on the same day. good luck!
