Can't decide on a setting (BGD Novela or WF Bead-set)

Hello,

I've created a thread earlier with my interest in BGD and the Novela setting. I plan on getting a BGD H&A 0.8-0.9ct stone.

Well I went to Tiffany's the other day to get an idea of the Novela (i.e. Tiffany Novo) and to see if there are other options. The Tiffany Novo did not impress me but I really liked the Round Brilliant 6-prong Bead-Set. The pave on the Tiffany Novo is 1point whereas the Novela is 2points. Does this make a difference in look?

Now I'm stumped since I really like the Novela through pictures and videos but now I'm just not sure. Looking for some input because I can't get this out of my head.

Should I stick with the Novela or consider the Whiteflash Tiffany Replica? (However, I don't like the head too much. Prongs seem thick)

I was consider maybe doing a custom with Tiffany Style Bead-Set Setting but with the Novela head. I like the 4 prong setting.

I'd like a classic but in a way I don't want to have a ring that many (friends) will have a similar style to.

Any input is appreciated! Thanks

I would buy the diamond and setting from the same vendor if I was you. I can't see the point in using two vendors when you can get what you want from one. Just tell BGD what setting you have in mind and i'm sure they can do it for you.

Well if I was going with the WF, I'd get an ACA stone.

I'm confused. Sorry, you tried on the Tiffany Novo and didn't like it. But you are still looking at the Novella? Why? It's very similar and I'd hate to see you end up with something you don't like.

I personally adore that fishtail novella. But I've seen BGD's fishtail and tried it on in person (plus a ton of other settings) so I REALLY know my own preferences well and what works for me. Whether it will work for you depends on what you didn't like about the Novo? What was it about the Tiffany Novo that put you off it?

I do not like that bead set WF one. I'd ask BGD if they can do something like this: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/peggy-18k-white-gold-5359w18 But with the Novella head and no cathedral. Which would be the best of both worlds IMO.

This is for my girlfriend but I felt the diamonds in pave setting in the Novo didn't stand out as if the diamonds were too small. However, from pictures, the Novela seems to do that. The band was very thin too. Basically I think I would like a slightly thicker version of the Novo.

Maybe a custom version would work? Not sure how much more it would cost though.

I'm actually starting to really like the Peggy. If I could put the Novela head instead of the cathedral (i.e. criss cross pattern) I think it could possibly be it.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Your directions should be:

I'd like the shank to be in the same pave style as the Peggy, and the same thickness. But I do not want the X prong head or the cathedral. Instead I would like the Novella head style.

Thanks. This seems to be a 2.8mm width. Would a .8 look good on it? or is it too small for this setting?

Any other suggestions are welcomed!

My choice would be the BGD setting. Gorgeous!

i agree with one of the PP were its probably easiest to get the stone and setting in the same place. That way you dont have to pay to have it set and shipped and all.

what about this one?

Its a little different but it still has band all the way around, and then you wouldnt have the concerns about the width.

I prefer the WF setting.

My opinion actually depends on what kind of specs you're looking at for the diamond. IMO, I'd personally aim for something more like a plain Tiffany-style solitaire (BGD tapered Tiffany, in fact) and throw the extra $1k or more into a larger diamond. Depends on whether you're going to be able to hit the 1 ct mark with the excess. If you're being value-minded with your stone specs, you may be able to.

Proportionally, I wouldn't like an 80 point stone in a setting that thick personally. I'd prefer the fishtail pave.

Most women prefer more delicate settings than men do. I know you didn't care for the thinness of the Novo, but... what about her tastes? Does she like thinner or thicker shanks? What styles has she admired and expressed interest in?

Should I ... consider the Whiteflash Tiffany Replica?

On your other post, you mentioned that your girlfriend was brand conscious. One thing to consider if you go for a replica is that she might get asked "Is that a Tiffany ring?". It may (or may not) be awkward for her to explain that it is not actually a Tiffany ring. You can probably get a replica that's every bit as good as the original -- but it wouldn't be "the real thing". Some people care, some don't.

I think the designs you're looking at are all classic. Another way to get a classic design that's unique is to go with a smaller designer. Mark Morrell or Leon Megé have excellent reputations around here, and do impeccable work. I'm sure there are others that could be mentioned.

Thanks for everyone's input. I just had another great conversation with Lesley. Basically, it's still a toss up between the Novela and a custom Tiffany Style bead-set (but I will use the Novela head). She can definitely make that for me.

I think I will make one more visit to Tiffany to see what I like but these are two options I'm sticking with. No more options for me (or I'll go crazy).

But BGD it is!

I'm really glad you are going to go with BGD! I've had great experiences with them and so have many others. If there are EVER any issues, they will make it right for you.

Lovely dilemma to be having - both are beautiful choices. I'd personally do the BGD Novella... but you know your FFI best!

I like the Peggy the best. It has a lucida head. I personally dislike the Novo and Solitaire heads so I am biased.

I know you said no more options but I like this one too ...

Sorry, no help to the original poster, but that is one beautiful ring!

Appreciate the other option but unfortunately I don't think my girlfriend would like this. I know she prefers a simpler head setting. Thanks though!
