So the journey begins. Some may remember I got on recently with this lengthy here is my girlfriend and here is what I’m looking for etc etc etc and here are some ring ideas. I was told I was overanalyzing and to go classy and that my selection was not attractive…..and one of the options I should seek out was Victor Canera.

So, after getting my self-esteem back onboard, I called Victor over the weekend to start the conversation regarding diamonds and his process for custom or modified designs. First, he is a very easy man to speak with. After seeing VC’s last ring with the side moon half-stones, I was convinced he was our man. He returned my email immediately and suggested I call……..during the call he said remember this is a ring she will wear every day, the rest of her life……don’t get too crazy or too unique and trendy. I told him I had looked at BG and WF diamonds and he said he had a smaller selection but would put his H&A and European cut diamonds up against anyone (to me it makes sense to get ring and diamond from same person). My girlfriend who was born in England and of Polish descent was intrigued by the Canera European Round cut. It doesn’t have as much brilliance as H&A but has more fire and seems more romantic to her. Victor said his CERs are beautiful and his cut design does give optimal light so there is brilliance, just not as much as H&A. He said the fire and colors can be quite beautiful.

I told him we were not going to start this process until summer and he said we could come visit (we are in Seattle) and look at diamonds and rings. So here are some questions before we begin the VC quest:

1. Who has seen or owns a Canera European Round cut? I looked for threads and saw some but they are a couple of years old. How do they compare to other new European cut diamonds? And how do they compare to H&A? Are they too dull over time? I should mention we are looking at 1.7-2.1 carats.

2. If we select the CER, what goes best for side stones and/or pave stones? Victor said some stones that go well with H&A don’t go as well with European cut or at least the cut has to be similar. He suggested cuts for the side stones and pave that would match like single cuts or smaller CERs. Currently my girlfriend likes the idea of pear shaped side stones but we she is very open to anything as long as the “rock” is not hidden or overshadowed.

3. And my girlfriend wants a wedding band on the SAME finger so I guess we need to take that into consideration?

Sorry again for long post, but I’m the analytical one in the couple. LOL

I have both H&A diamonds and a newly cut OEC of a different brand, but I will tell you that these well cut new OECs are extremely beautiful and in no way are less beautiful than H&A stones! In fact, they are more rare and unique! I would not do modern cut side stones, though. If she really wants pears, that goes better with a H&A stone. If she wants a three stone ring, I'd have Victor cut a matched pair of his European Rounds for that. Otherwise, choose a setting that has smaller accent stones. You can probably find many pictures of antique OECs as well as August Vintage Rounds in various settings to get ideas. I think it is great you plan to buy your stone and setting from Victor! He is a very gifted artist!

I am not seeing a thread dedicated to just OECs, so you can search for OEC on the Show Me the Bling part of the forum and many threads will come up. Here is a thread with other newly cut antique stones to give you setting ideas:

This is a newly posted ring in a beautiful style with a newly cut OEC center:

Once you get ideas of what she really likes, then Victor can design a beautiful ring!

Thanks!!!
