Other than the fact that they are conflict-free, are Canadian diamonds of higher quality than others? A reputable jeweler told me that the Canadian rough is lighter in color, so a G Canadian will look like an F color from elsewhere. I don''t see how this could be true. Wouldn''t the GIA just certify that stone as an F to begin with? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

at the highest level, some Canadian Ds may be more colorless than other Ds.

two things:

1. some canadian diamonds have better transperency than some other diamonds - but each diamond is different so general rules will not help you unless you want to buy a parcel of 10,000 stones.

2. Buy a Canadian diamond to help Africans? Can you tell me how that will help someone in Sierra Leone earning $2 a day make $3 a day? I do not know how the Canadian PR team can sleep at night!

Garry,

I am not a proponent of Canadian diamonds...but the logic is pretty straightforward, I think.

A diamond buyer could just decide to support a better model for diamond production. I understand miners in Canada do not have it good, but there''s a recognized minimum standard for quality of life they are holding to, and buyers can be assured that individuals involved in the production of the diamond were not significantly mistreated. There does not have to be the larger intent to further help undo an otherwise rotten system.

All sellers are in the business of singing the praises of their own merchandise. I don’t recall ever seeing a Canadian advert that directly disparages African or anyone else’s products. They prefer pictures of majestic polar bears to dead baby seals but that’s just the nature of advertising. It’s basically true that Canadian workers are treated fairly well and they usually don’t advertise the problems they are having with land ownership rights with the first nations people or even with environmental type issues. Although they are comparatively good on those fronts, they do have their problems and they aren’t as clear cut as the labor relations issues. Customers can be proud to buy Canadian products. The problem comes with individual sellers downstream from the Canadian miners and manufacturers that want to promote Canadian products as the ONLY ones available that are produced in responsible ways because they think it helps their own sales. I agree that such dealers are doing no favors for the people of Africa. You can’t blame that one on the Canadians. If anything, it’s a problem with the Africans and their resellers doing a bad job of marketing their own products.
