Can you plan a wedding around a dress? Help!

Hi everyone,

I''ve been engaged for quite a long time (due to some crazy life circumstances we had to put the wedding off a number of times - nothing to do with our relationship and readiness for marriage, however), but the good news is that we''re finally ready to plan this thing! The problem is.... I am hitting a brick wall when it comes to the general style/feel I''d like for the big day. We have a venue, its an estate that overlooks a vineyard. The house is very pretty, sort of a spanish villa feel, but the outside area where we will have the ceremony and reception is pretty much a blank slate - some grass and an infinity pool looking out toward the vineyard.

This is what I need help with. When it comes to decor, flowers, linens, bridesmaid dresses, etc. etc., I just don''t know where to start. I purchased my dress a LONG time ago, thinking I''d be getting married in a few short months. While I''m not totally in love with my dress anymore due to the passing of time, I''m committed to trying to make it work so I don''t have to go through the trouble and cost of finding a new one.

My dress is la sposa faro. Does anyone think this dress lends itself naturally to a certain style or feel for the rest of the wedding? Thanks SO much in advance if you can help.

There have been several brides that have had that same dress for their weddings. Unfortunately our search engine is down but if you do a google search, you can find brides that have used the same dresses and get a sense of what their decor was like. Also, there is a sticky thread that says something along the lines of "show me your dress." If you go through there, you can find brides with the same dress or similar, click on their avatar, and take a look at some of their planning threads for ideas on decor.

I will try to find some links for you (now that the office is empty lol).

ETA: I have to add also that while I do believe that certain dresses give off a very specific feel (like I wouldn't expect a ball gown for a beach wedding) I personally do not believe that you have to decorate according to the feel that your dress gives off, if that makes any sense.

Here's a link to other La Sposa brides that you can get inspiration from

Thanks so much, Fiery! That helps a lot. I''ll take a look through the link.

Your dress is very classy and beautiful. I think it would go with a lot of ideas.

thanks Oddoneout! I think that''s my problem... its hard for me to come up with anything concrete because it will go with pretty much anything and that makes it even harder to decide.

first, love the dress! i bet it looks fantastic on you!

now, as for decor or theme or feel. i know you said that the outside area is a blank slate but why not use the spanish villa feel of the house as a jumping off point? la sposa (a division of pronovias) is a spanish company, right? do you have a photos of the estate??

also, what season are you planning the wedding for? sometimes that can help dictate a color palette.

thanks Lulu! I don''t have photos on this computer but may be able to scrounge some up. As for the season, it will be late Spring (either late May or early June). So much is in bloom at that time which means I have my pick of a variety of flowers which is great. I really love peonies but not sure that would go with the spanish feel of the home. There are so many different color combinations that I have seen and loved... I love yellow with grey, or magenta with grey, I also love cream/white/beige tones. So many decisions!

I love your dress! I think it is beautiful!

I think that because it is such a beautiful, simple, elegant dress, anything you choose will go well with it. If you are able to get us some pictures of your venue, and give us some more info on what you like, I''m sure you will get plenty of help!

well, i browsed some inspiration boards on snippet & ink (a great resource by the way). here''s a few color combos that caught my eye!
green, creams, bronzes
purples
oranges, creams, reds

any of these tickle your fancy? or do you HATE any/all of them??

i love yellow & gray too! my best friend has chosen that for her wedding colors, so chic!

Thanks so much for those links! It really does help to look at inspiration boards. I really like the first two. My problem is I like *so* many different combinations.. part of me wishes I had a clear cut theme or something so that these decisions were easier. I think I just need to bite the bullet and pick something that I love and I won''t be able to go wrong.

OMG! You''re dress is FRIGGIN GORGEOUS!!!!

I think its so classy that''ll be very easy to pull together ideas!

What colors are you thinking of?

Have you considered asking your FI? Mine and I each picked our favorite color and made everything work around that

thanks girlface and futuremrsMRS! Brazen_irish_hussy - I''ve asked him and he seems to have the same problem I do! We like tons of stuff and he is telling me I can make the final decision.

ok here are two pictures of the venue.. hope this works.

i don''t think you can go wrong w/something you love! my color scheme has definitely evolved throughout the engagement (unbeknown to FI, he could care less & doesn''t even know you should have "colors" or a "theme" LOL). your venue is beautiful. i really like the first inspiration board i posted now that i see your venue. lots of creams w/dashes of greens & bronzes would be beautiful.

but, really, pick something YOU love and stick to it. there will always be other color combos/themes out there & unfortunately you can''t use them all in this one event (trust me, i''ve tried

) with that location & that dress, your wedding will be fab no matter what colors/theme you choose.

please, keep us posted. i''m so anxious to see what you decide on. also, are you marrying this year or next?

thanks, yeah I need to remind myself to just choose something and go with it.. sort of like the dress, you can''t incorporate every style you love into one event!

The wedding will be next year, May of 2011 I guess. Ack, we probably will have had the longest engagement in the history of ps

I am excited though even though its so far away!

Thanks so much for your input!

That''s a lovely dress - I think it would work with a lot of decor/style ideas

this looks very PNW to me. Very fresh (i imagined salmon being served), Wine County-farm lands, bright sunsets (oranges), and market/farm fresh flowers.

but then again, thats just me :P

Spanish house? Check! Pronovias dress? Check! You are all set my friend!!! What an awesome and original theme i think a spanish style wedding would be.. in a vineyard no less!! Think Tapas and sangria, flamenco dancing and pinatas!!! Oh i want to get married again and have a spanish wedding!!

Sorry i am getting away with myself here...

I agree with everyone that no matter what style /colours /themes you go with, as long as you love it, it will be amazing. With such a beautiful venue and setting i would take the less is more approachh though.. no need to cover up an already beautiful canvas.

Ps, i love your dress.. i drooled and drooled over pronovias for months before i actually tied them on, unfortunately they just weren''t for me.

Thanks so much for your ideas, ladies! They''re really helping me to picture a cohesive style.

I love that dress, and as Fiery pointed out it''s had some smashing success on PS:-)

A spanish themed vineyard wedding with tapas and sangria would be awesome!!!

I love this idea!

Here''s a link with some interesting ideas: vineyard wedding. They did a Mexican chocolate cake topped with fuschia dahlias.

Questions:

What is your favorite color? What is FI''s? I''m not asking this in relation to the wedding, but in general, what are your favorites?

As for the wedding, forget the venue and the dress for a minute and just focus on your preferences--what kind of vibe do you want it to have? Do you see people sipping champagne and talking or do you see them kicking off heels and dancing all night?

What''s your usual style? If you''re usually a laid back hippie chick type, having a hot pink wedding with rhinestones everywhere wouldn''t likely be your thing, so what fits you and your FI?

If you were throwing a party, what would it be like? Would people be mellow, hanging out, sipping wine, and engaging in conversation, or would people be kicking off their shoes, dancing their butts off, and having a wild time?

I guess what I''m getting at here is that your wedding should be a reflection of you and your FI--sure, we can all sit here and throw out generic ideas that would be cool, but what does that say about you guys? Where''s the stamp of Mr. and Mrs. Orchid on it, ya know? If you figure out what kind of vibe you''re wanting the wedding to have, some things will fall into place from that.

thanks Bella_mezzo and kittygolightly, I love the tapas and sangria idea!

Doodle, that is such a great point, thank you! To answer your questions:

Fav color/style - I''m not really a favorite color person (haha, of course not, that would be too easy, right?) But, I do for sure have colors that I love wearing and decorating with, so maybe that means I do have favorite colors? I wear a ton of white. I know that probably sounds boring, but I just love how fresh and clean white is. Love white flowers, love white tops and I drive a white car. Love white cabinets and white linens. I also love pops of color as accents. I''ll wear a white top (I also love embroidery on white tops) with skinny jeans and flats most days if I don''t need to dress up. My style is generally pretty casual but girly - without being over the top pink girly. I do like pink, but not a ton of it. And I''m not really a rhinestones everywhere type of person either. I think that''s why I picked a simple dress. I also gravitate towards yellow, beiges, creams, and for brighter accents, fresh green, lavender or maybe a little bit of pink. I am so all over the map

FI is in to more bold/dark colors as far as how he dresses, but we have the same taste for decor. We like contrast - white cabinets with dark wood floors and fresh flowers on the table. We''ve talked about the wedding being sort of modern meets vintage? I''d love to throw some spanish feel in there as well to incorporate the venue.

When we throw parties its typically the laid back, sipping wine and listing to music on the deck type of party, we do also love to dance! I really want the guests of our wedding to have a great time, and that will include dancing to the wee hours hopefully.

Wow, just writing that out helps me to put some ideas together in my head. Thanks for the suggestion to consider these things!

If you are interested in styling your wedding with a spanish theme this article gives some awesome ideas (both traditional and modern) for table decorations which you could probably extend though out the villa. I love the idea of wrought iron candleabras and heavy pottery.
