Hello, I do not have insurance on my jewelry. I have it checked lots, but earrings just feel scary to me and i would like to get insurance for them. I have read such horror stories about homeowners insurance being cancelled after claims! Is it possible to insure them with another company? Any good recs that will help you replace a very specific grade and proprietary diamond cut? Many thanks!

I use Jewelers Mutual. You just need an up to date appraisal or receipt.

I insure jewellery with a separate company for exactly that reason: I don't want any jewellery-related claims to have any effect on my homeowner policy or premiums.

Jeweller's Mutual specialises in insuring jewellery; some carriers will permit standalone policies but you'll want to call and find out what's offered (it seems to be dependent on location and total value). A thorough appraisal that catalogues all those details (stone info and brand, setting details, etc.) is your (only) ticket to fair replacement... to find independent appraisers start with the tab under Resources, then search the forum for experiences with the individuals listed. You can also try a generic search for "appraisers in X" if you live in a larger city.

How does jewelers mutual handle claims?

I have my jewelry insured on my homeowners policy. I did make a large claim about 7 years ago and it did not have a negative effect on my policy. If the jewelry is listed separately on the policy, there's not a deductible and they pay with no questions asked. If it is not listed on the policy, there's still a way to make a claim however, only a percentage paid.

Most policies are written that they will replace a lost item with another of like kind and quality, and they will pay the jeweler directly for that replacement. The replacement will be based on the details submitted when you bind the policy (for example the description in your appraisal). Repairs, to the extent that they’re needed and covered under the policy, can be done by the jeweler of your choice although there are some limits for how much they will pay for what sorts of services. Each state and province has different rules and insurance is one of the most regulated products out there. The details vary from state to state and even policy to policy. For specific coverage questions, contact the underwriting department. They’re pretty responsive.
