Hi All,

fter some intensive research about the ‘right’ proportions for brilliant diamonds and searching, below diamonds are the 4 of my final selection.

Despite the research, I’m still not an expert so I would be helped a lot if you could let me know which one you think would be the best choice.

0.44, D, IF, 61.6/54, 3.5, 34/40.6, GIA 6342510375

0.46, E, IF, 61/57, 3.5, 35/40.6 GIA 1349581015

0.5, F, VVS1, 61.9/55, 3.5, 34/40.8, GIA 3345652570

0.53, VVS1, 60.9/57, 3.5, 34/40.6, GIA 6345653982

Those guidelines aren't far from those that are generally put forward on here.

It looks like the stones you have listed will perform well in the HCA tool (i.e. have scores under or just over 2), and therefore will have angles that are complementary and performance that is good.

May I ask if the high colour and high clarity is required for cultural reasons or because of expectations?

It is generally considered on here that it is very hard to tell the different between a D and an F on the finger, or even a D and a J if the cut is extremely good and the setting hides the stone from the side somewhat, and anything above VS1 in clarity will 99.9% look the same to the naked eye, so you could theoretically drop to perhaps a G VS1 and gain higher carat weight (i.e. size).

@OoohShiny I hope you know that I am a fan of yours but, and I say this will all due respect, I feel that saying a D and a J, even in an extremely well-cut diamond, will look similar on the finger is a bit of a stretch. I definitely am in agreement with you on the clarity (although if my budget would allow for something in the VVS to F range in a size I want I would definitely do it!). We don't know if OP wants a larger diamond so maybe the size isn't important?? I think if OP has been looking at colorless but wants a larger diamond, they should got for VS1 as you suggested, but I think they should not go lower than F (although I prefer E, there is a slight change between E & F, and if they are already looking at Ds, they will see it for sure). I love small tables, so that 54 is something I would love to see in person. My SIL has a 54 table and I love it. Although some do not consider a 54 to be acceptable for "ideal', is that correct? Aside from the clarity and color, I think OP needs to visually see these diff table sizes in person and decide if they even like the smaller table... I know some people prefer something more like a 57.

You are far too kind :)

I am personally speaking totally with you on a J not looking like a D ;) but that said, others on here have reported that when face-up and reflecting light, on a moving finger, and especially in bezel settings that don't enable a side-on view through the stone, the right lighting can make it very difficult to tell a difference in colour grades.

I think I would still see some tint, especially in flat lighting, but it would be a disservice not to mention the possibility as something worth checking :)

As you say, checking out the options with our own eyes is the best idea!

IMHO, F VS1 is a great place to be if you are colour- and clarity-sensitive - it's pretty much guaranteed to look colourless in all lights, 99.9% guaranteed eye-clean, and without the premium of D, E and VVS+ grades :))

Smaller tables are also good to my eyes - 54% or even 53% should look great in terms of producing coloured fire/dispersion, if I understand things correctly!
