OK, how''s this for a bit of Christmas cheer - this is the g/f''s gift I''ve just finished making for her (don''t laugh!)

Well, actually, I''m only showing you the interesting bits now - you''ve got to guess:

1) What type of piece it is (yes, it''s jewellery) and
2) What it is.

The prize is... well, how about a mince pie?

The diamond is a 0.332 I VS1 from Good Old Gold with beautiful H&A images. Jonathan''s The Man, as far as I''m concerned!

The half bezel setting looks a bit crooked but good enough for a first attempt, I thought! Actually, I''m quite glad the stone didn''t break in my hands...

Well it's hard to tell but maybe part of a pendant or antique piece with the hallmarks of the period and gold content?

Now, where's that mince pie?

Well, now that I answered that qustion - I think it is a part of Scotland & the diamond marking the city maybe that she is from - Wick? And,probably a pendant. I expanded on Valeria's astute guess.

F&I & others...

This is the finished product. Wow, Valeria - you know your maps...

While others would call the detail in the middle scratches, I prefer to think of them as "features", in used-car-dealer speak.

You can just say that the scratches represent the rugged terrain of the Outback.

Very cool!

I thought it would be a good idea to keep a photographic record of the process, especially since it was my first attempt. Notice that I changed my mind about where the bale would go - initially thought it would go at the top end of Australia, around Arnhem Land, but eventually settled for just over Darwin in the northwest.

PG - that thought had crossed my mind! Although I was last in Alice Springs in the summer of 2000, marvelling at how green the outback was - it was a particularly 'rainy' dry season and not as rugged as I'd imagined it!
