Can you find out a diamonds ''history''? Where it came from?

Is the date on the GIA report related to shortly after the diamond was cut and therefore ''born'' so to speak? And is there a way of finding out where your stone actually came from (in terms of country)? Or indeed if it has been previously owned?

nope.

GIA report date will be whenever GIA issue the report for the stone. A pre-owned stone might be sent back to GIA and gets a new report, due to wear and tear and the vendor re-cuts it or down-grade the clarity grade, and then you get a relatively new dated report.

Vendor would know the history of at least those he buy back. If a virtual stone, probably no.

Stones direct from cutting house will have the history well documented. Paul of CraftedbyInfinity is involved in each step of the cutting process, he will know the origins of each stone, the newer stones even has the rough image taken before the polishing.

Well... the vendors who select rough and cut them will be able to tell. As an example, Jon at GOG will be able to tell you for his August Vintage line. I almost got a photo of my rough before it was cut into a diamond but I asked too late ... diamond was already cut. Most vendors will known where the diamonds come from and where they are cut. Mark at ERD was able to tell me that my diamond was cut in Belgium.

As Stone Cold has mentioned just below this post the date on the grading report relates only to the date that the diamond was sent to the Lab issuing the report.

There are a few, very few, cutters who know the origin of each and every stone and because of the nature of their business they can tell you where each and every stone came from. These will be smaller cutting operations who can take on the arduous task of tracking each diamond from start to finish. All site holders and major diamond houses will know initially as they have to be sure not to being involved with conflict diamonds, but once you sent this months ten thousand diamonds out to be cut it gets confusing. Add to this the fact that many, if not most, on line vendors are selling from virtual lists that contain diamonds from hundreds of suppliers and it becomes absolutely impossible for most vendors to tell you anything about your individual diamond''s history.

That includes knowing whether or not the diamond was previously owned unless the vendor of the diamond is the one who purchased it back from the previous owner.

If these things are important to you then you will need to search out and deal with one of the houses that do keep track of these things and who are happy to provide you with that information.

When the conflict diamond issue arose about 10 or so years ago a lot of research was conduct to see if there was any way to track a diamond''s history after it was cut with any degree of certainty, and the result is that for the vast majority it is impossible. The only way is for the diamond manufacturer to keep track of each kimberly certificate and which diamond came from which rough. But even in this case one would have to trust this vendor. If ever a diamond''s country of origin became a value factor then everyone would say their diamond came from the right (more expensive) country and there would be no way to tell if they were lying. Sorry that I do not have a better answer.
