My sister’s sweet 16 is this year and her birthstone is emerald. I’ve found a (currently) well priced emerald ring at auction and the emerald looks nice but there’s no cert. It’s clearly an antique ring. I’d pull the stone and have it set as necklace. Other than natural vs synthetic can you buy an emerald just based on pics?

I bought mine without certification. Although there is synthetic emerald about, it’s pretty obvious and uncommon. Obviously you can’t be sure if it’s the typical minor cedar oil treatment or the oiled with coloured oil but if the price is reasonable I don’t think it really matters.

Thanks Bron! The different treatments are a bit confusing to me. But the emerald looks pretty so if it stays relatively inexpensive I’ll give it a go.

Congrats to your lil sis on her milestone bday and having such a thoughtful big sis!! I agree with Bron about the price dictating whether I would request a cert. Good luck!

Thank you. Pricing got too high for me to be cert-less so I backed out. I thought it was pretty though.

Save those $$$ pieces for when she's a little older. I wish I took better care of the pieces I was given at that age. Anyway, good luck with your hunt!
