I''m looking for a deep red(think burgandy, deep ruby red not purple red)fiery garnet. Square shape about 1 1/2 ct - 2 ct range. I''ve looked at the concave sites(some of them) but can''t seem to find a square or something around the size I''m looking for. If you have any suggestions to where I should look please let me know. Also let me know if there''s anything I should look for. Thanks!

Have you tried Richard M? RIchard Wise? MJO? I am sure that they could find you something that you are lookin for. I know that there are others.. i.e. Ana and others that can also point you in good directions.

I would try IMing Richard M, Richard Wise and MJO and let them know what you are looking for,
Good luck and be sure to keep us updated!

A small garnet with ruby-like color would be quite a find. I don''t remember any... Larger stones sometimes do get better saturation, but in small pieces the material is just not red enough. Spinel would probably be allot better at being red & small. Just IMO, of course.

Did you look at anthill garnets. They are deep dark red. The only problem is in sizes over 1ct they tend to be very dark unless in bright light.

Hi Ana,

Ant hill garnet is RED. I have a tennis braclet of them that is stunning in sunlight but tends to be dark in low light.

Does a spinel come in a square shape? All the ones I''ve seen here were round(very beautiful though). I wonder if I should look into a ruby instead. I just really want a deep red and most of the ruby''s I see are pinkish.

Usually deep red garnets will most of the time look black. I think that kind of color you can find in any jewelry store in mall. That kind of garnet are inexpensive. I have a beautiful Umba red garnet, but it has a round cut. Here is the picture.

Here is the pavilion view of the garnet.

Under incandescent light, it will show its spectacular true red flashes, laser like (or like concave cut even though its cut is not a concave cut).

MJO, sorry... I had just dropped technicals (tone, hue, sapturation...) for just a color's name. That previous post was trying to say that I have never seen a small garnet the color of red crayon tip. You have allot more experience, so i am revising my previous disinchantment with small red garnets

Well, as far as I know quares are not the most common shape for any gemstone, especially step cut squares - brilliant cut squares (cushion like) are somewhat more common. Are you looking for a step cut ? If so, it may be allot easier to have a cuter make one for you instead of hunting down the one lucky find of the century. A square garnet would even be easier to come by from a cuter because the material is allot easier to locate (and less expensive) than ruby or red spinel.

Rectangular or squareish cushions like these below are relatively common shapes for spinel - step cut squares definitely not.

The same shop (AJSgems) liste several step cut rubies - not half bad, as much as I can tell. You would not be the first to buy from them around here, although noone from AJS posts on Pricescope.

I can't tell what you call "deep red" - dark red, garnet-like color is not highly prized (or priced) for either ruby or spinel. Even if not top class for their own species, such garnet-ish stones are allot more expensve than garnet. At some point it is hard to tell what is what out of context. Having a garnet cut square to you specification, would get the dark color right without much hassle.

If "deep red" refferes to stop lights on the street - a bright red that is not pink - that is something that only a small elite crowd of either ruby or spinel can achieve and garnet cannot (as best I know, which is really not that much).

On the aside... if you are trying to avoind lighter tone pink ruby, pictures show some bias for it. Non-standard lighting for pictures makes colors allot harder to controll online... Regardless of real-life colors, pictures show the brighteness of red stones as pink patches - even dark stones get light colored facets in pictures taken under very strong light.

Hope some of this helps... the rectangular radiant cut rhodolite is the closest I could find to a square even for example. But it would not be very hard to have one made, I think.

Check out this one. I think you might be interested - though it is a ruby. A pretty one.
