Paired with a halo setting like the one linked to above but in platinum, it should fall smack in the middle of your intended budget.
I'm thinking the reason why platinum was suggested was because of the ability to dispense with things like rhodium plating (which maybe needed with white gold settings) and that it is hypoallergenic. Plus with a white metal setting (whether white gold or platinum), the diamond chould face up potentially a grade whiter (so an I coloured stone might end up looking more like a H coloured one) as the setting itself will contribute to how the stone looks face up.
