OK so I am making a purchase on a cushion cut without seeing it in person. I know I need at lease a H color but I am basically trying get a 1.5 carat for 5K and found this and made the purchase with a solid 30 day return policy (no return shipping cost, no restocking, etc).

At $4750 and GIA, without seeing in person would you make this purchase to put on a solitare setting. These numbers are taken straight from the GIA certificate. The price seems so low for GIA so I assume something is completely wrong with the diamond. with GIA I feel G color and SI1 is plenty for the cushion to sparkle with fire but if I am missing something i was hoping you could guide me in the right direction. Thank you for your time.

no opinions from the views?

As you will see written here many, many times here on the forum: you cannot determine whether a cushion will perform well (read: sparkle) based on numbers alone. You need an ASET at the very least to show the cut it and its light performance. That said, I'm strongly suspicious this particular stone would perform like a "crushed ice" cushion. Not all that popular here but some people do prefer that look for the multiple random sparkles over a more well-defined flash pattern.

I guess I was just wondering if there were exact specs to follow to insure that the diamond would sparkle and not be a dud. But im guessing that is impossible with a cushion cut? Im not looking for the greatest diamond out there...just a 1.5 ct that isnt a dud.

I appreciate the reply pandabee. What makes you suspicious that the stone would preform like the crushed ice look? The things I know for certain are she would like a 1.5 cushion and Im sure she will want it to sparkle like her girlfriends do...I guess ill just have to take a gamble on the stone online. I have already purchased the micropave band. I was told for certain I would need an H color since the cushion will be sitting next to the pave diamonds.

How can one get an ASET image of the diamond over the internet? probably asking for too much.

Just because of the price really. It would be extremely unusual to find a cushion that wasn't a dud of that size and price you were given. Just ask the vendor for an ASET image, shouldn't be a big deal.

Since you already bought the setting, do you know how big of a stone the setting holds? If they said "1.5ct cushion" it is just an estimate...settings are usually purchased after you already have a stone or know which one you are getting so that the setting can be made to properly hold the correct sized stone.

I'll echo what others have said, unless we get a picture, ASET, idealscope...something...we can't really comment. What is the faceting like? Is it crushed ice? Antique? Modern? Go to James Allen and search for cushions close to your specs. Look at the variety...so many different shapes and faceting structure. Until you see the stone in person, you won't know if it's a good performer. If you search for a G-I, SI1 1.4-1.6 ct with a max of $5k, no diamonds can be found. Which concerns me that your diamond may be a dud, based on price alone.

Way too risky to buy any fancies without seeing at least a picture of the stone in question. Then it needs a follow up with an ASET to be 100% sure because often even the photo won't tell you everything. $5K for a 1.5 ct GIA G SI1 is really low.

The GIA plot shows that the pavilion is cut in the style that referred to as crushed ice, lots of pinfire sparkles, no broad flashes.
