I have been looking for a good value on an attractive Emerald between about 2.6 and 3.1 carats. I have seen some I color stones that look fine to my eye, and I have also seen folks talk about J color stones which still have a white appearance when viewed"face up"..

If I am seeking stones from online vendors it seems that there are some great values in J stones, but I fear that the color issue is highly subjective. Is it unwise to to to a J color in a stone of this size??

Some of the emerald cut experts should offer their advice, but from what I''ve seen, color can be quite apparent in an emerald cut. Maybe that won''t bother you, but you should probably be prepared that an I or J emerald cut diamond may not face up completely white.

I am not an expert but I think J is a little too low for an EC that size. I have a 1.72 I colored EC and while it is white MOST of the time, I can see tints of light yellow in certain lighting at certain angles. I would personally not go below an I.

ETA: Rod- my EC is completely white face up.

Perhaps I should have said in that size. He''s looking at a pretty large size...........

I wouldn''t go below an H for an emerald (especially of that size).

Wait a second, is Defender asking about an emerald-cut diamond, or just an emerald (as in the green gemstone)?

Okay, duh! I just answered my own question. I wasn''t sure at first, because people (esp. guys) sometimes get on here (who have NO experience with diamonds and gemstones) to post questions. I just re-read the post and saw that Defender had "looked at" some I colored stones, so never mind...LOL.

Generally shapes such as Emerald Cuts and Asschers will show more colour than a round, especially the larger you go. I would think you could well see a hint of colour in an EC of the size you want, but the only way to tell is with a properly graded diamond ( GIA) preferably and with your own eyes. I would be hesitant with a J so large IMO unless you didn''t mind a touch of warmth. As Jazmine said in your other thread, rounds are different and hide colour better if well cut particularly.
