Can I get some PS dust?

Most of you know that DH and I lost our beloved kitty EQ 3 years ago. Well, now our best buddy Peanut is very sick and needs some PS dust. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis after an ultrasound in October and his health has been declining every day. He used to be a very robust 22 pound cat (he's a Maine Coon) who snuggled under the covers with us every night. He was always kind of a loner and never really "hung out" much, opting to just kind of hide most of the time. He now weighs 15 pounds and is constantly hiding and urinating where he hides. He hasn't used the litter box (except for a handful of times) for the last 3 months.

We gave him Flagyl for a few days a couple of times, but didn't really see any results. The medicine is very foul tasting and caused him to foam at the mouth and be all around very miserable. He got to the point where he avoided going into the kitchen for anything because he associated that with us giving him the meds, and he would avoid us and make licking motions with his mouth whenever he saw us coming near him. So we stopped giving it to him, hoping to give him a better quality of life.

The biggest problem we had initially was him defecating outside of the box. We had all his labs done and an ultrasound, which is when they diagnosed the pancreatitis. Everything else was normal.

But...for the past 2 weeks, and most especially the past 3 days, his urinating outside of the box is out of control. We've gone through at least a gallon of Urine Destroyer. He's peed on our bed at least 6 times and we've had to have our comforter professionally cleaned each time. We didn't want to deny him the under cover snuggles that he so loves, so we had been giving him access to our bedroom at night (not during the day), but DH woke up to urine on his side of the bed yesterday, so that's stopped. He's also peed on our dining room rug and on multiple other surfaces so much that we were forced to buy a UV light just to find the source of the smell.

Peanut has 2 little hiding places in our home -one in our spare bedroom and one in DH's music room. Both have towels for his comfort. In the last 24 hours he's urinated in both of those places twice and just laid there, in his own urine. We've washed so many towels in the past few days....

I know it's only a matter of time. I know that. I've emailed our vet, asking for advice, to see if there are any last ditch efforts we can do. But, in the end, I know that's it's almost time for him. And it makes me so very sad. And DH is going to be devastated. That's his "best buddy in the whole world". I'm more worried about him than myself, truth be told. He's putting up a very brave face, but I know deep inside he's dying, too.

I guess I'm just asking for some dust and some love (I know I can't ask for prayers on PS, so whatever ya got, I'll take 'em). This sucks. Thanks.

Dust, jingles, prayers from me and my 4 cats to you and Peanut. Hopefully there is something that can be done. Could this be another food contamination issue?? I flit between discussion boards, and there seem to be several cats with some sudden onset of a digestive or metabolic issue.

Lil M, I'm so sorry to hear of Peanut's illness. Poor little guy, and I know you and DH are in the pit. I don't know anything about cats, but I know there is a feline specialist vet around here, and Missy knows a lot about fat behavior and health. Hopefully they will both stop in here.

Healing dust to Peanut, you and your DH.

Sending you all hugs and hoping for a healthy turn soon.

Hopefully for much later...
Does your vet make house calls? It cost a little extra but was so peaceful for my puppy and not rushed for us. Well worth it.
Also, consider doing a paw print rock. I didn't know it was an option but am very glad of it now.

Oh dear, so sad to hear about your sick kitty.
Maybe confine him to one small room, and put drop cloths covered with old towels/blankets all around.
You can't stop him from peeing. He's sick and will go where he wants.
Lots of dust coming your way..........................

I'm sorry to hear about your baby. Have you seen any blood in the urine? Is it possible he has a uti or kidney infection? Poor thing.

Dust for your little Peanut!

Has your vet recommended Milk Thistle? It helped one of my cats with liver disease and I have read that it is sometimes helpful for cats with other issues.

I wish it were that simple, but it''s not a food contamination issue. He's had acute on chronic pancreatitis for years, but is in a very acute stage right now. He's also on a prescription diet from the vet (Royal Canin PD).

Yes, our vet does make house calls. When it's time, she will come here. And DH and I will get another memorial tattoo, like we did for EQ.

Thanks. That's what we've done. He's in our back bedroom, with plenty of towels to lay on. The floor is covered in piddle pads and there's a litter box in there as well, in case he wants to use it. Also, his food and water is in there too.

No blood in his urine. We took him to the vet last week to see if there was any UTI or blockage going on and there wasn't. We think he just doesn't feel good, so he doesn't feel like getting up. We've been giving him pain medicine daily and started him on an injectable steroid last week, which can cause increased urination. We were hoping the steroid would help him feel better...

I am so sorry that you are going through this. You sound like the best kitty parents in the world, doing everything you can.
This is such a hard time. It sometimes helps me to think that the ends of things are inevitable & emotional and part of the loving is to go through this stage with one's dear cat.
Much Dust this morning!

I am so sorry Lil Misfit. ;( ;( ;( My heart goes out to you, your dh and your sweet kitty.

I wish I had some miracle cure but I don't. When our Billy developed pancreatitis we fed him very small meals throughout the day, kept him hydrated with IV fluids and that seemed to help though he was also very sick with diabetes and heart disease and eventually succumbed to those diseases.

Did the doctor test Peanut for a parasitic infection? I know proper hydration is critical and to that end if he is not drinking and eating perhaps IV fluid/nutrition can help.

My heart is breaking for you and Peanut and I am praying he starts feeling better.

I am sending you lots and lots of PS ***DUST*** and healing vibes and good thoughts.

Oh, poor thing!! So much dust for your kitty. Maine coons are my favorite!

I cared for my best friend's cat when he was first diagnosed with pancreatitis. He had a plastic tube surgically inserted into his stomach and it had a cap on it. When it was time to feed him, we would take this special food, mix it with warm water, put it into a large syringe with a flexible straw on the end, fit that straw into the straw on his tummy and feed him. When he was first diagnosed, he was near death, but with tube feedings, and medication, he pulled through and lived another 9 years. Is this a possibility? Maybe even a second opinion?

Also, my girl just went through something a month ago and needed antibiotics for two weeks. They gave me the option of an injection that stayed in her system for two weeks or oral antibiotics that I had to administer each day. I opted for the injection. Maybe you can ask if there is an injectable antibiotic that might help your kitty.

More dust to you!! It is so heartbreaking to watch our furbabies go through this.

I talked at length with our vet today. Since Peanut gets very nervous when going to the vet and pees in his carrier there's no way to bring him in to get a urine sample, so we decided to put him on an antibiotic (Convenia injection) empirically. He may or may not have a UTI. Last time we brought him in they were unable to get a urine sample from him, but at the time I was more worried about blockage because I thought he hadn't peed in 3 days. They did a physical exam and found his bladder to be empty and didn't see any blood in the pee in the carrier, so assumed it wasn't a UTI or blockage.

The vet said that the steroid will cause an increase in his urination for the first 1-2 days and then by day 4 it's out of his system. We gave him his last steroid shot on Saturday and that night and Sunday were when he was peeing all the time. So, it's possible that it's a result of the steroid. I questioned the effectiveness of the steroid since it was supposed to make him feel better, but to me he just looks miserable and pathetic :blackeye: His appetite has increased immensely since starting the steroid, so the vet believes that's a sign that he is actually feeling better. DH also notices that at times he seems to be feeling ok and he's spent 16 days straight with him while he was on vacation for the holidays. So maybe it's just me?

We're not giving up on him just yet. We also started him on some fish oil. The vet had given us 4 samples last time and he seemed to like them, so I picked up some more today. It's supposed to help with inflammation as well. And I picked up some more pain medicine syringes.

Today was the first day he was confined to his little room all day and he peed in the box 2x and actually came out when I came home to feed him. He seems ok right now. We're going to give him the antibiotic when DH gets home and keep giving him the steroid, the fish oil and the pain meds and go from there.

Fingers crossed. Thank you all for the love and dust. He's our best buddy in the whole world and we're not ready to lose him yet.

Here is the most recent pic of our handsome guy, from when we got back from Maui in November.

Gosh... The pain of pilling cats! One tip that I picked up from Google was to toss the pill as far back in the mouth towards the throat as possible, with the goal of bypassing the tongue, then hold the mouth shut, blow on the nose, and release. The nose blowing is to tickle the nose and for the cat to lick her nose in response to the tickle. The licking action causes swallowing to happen.

BUT if the pill was large, it was hard to toss it into the back of kitty's mouth, so we ended up cutting the pills in half and dosing twice a day as opposed to once.
