Can I chip my stone by dropping it on the floor?

Hello!

It was rather cold this morning, and when I was moving around/getting ready for work, my ring actually flew off my hand and landed on the floor. It''s a hardwood floor, not marble or tile (and unfortunately, also not carpet). I stared at it for a loooong time and didn''t see damage, but could it be damaged, anyway?

Oh, and does this "flying off the hand" action mean that my ring is not correctly sized?

Thanks!

If your ring actually flew off your hand during wear, then yes, I''d say it''s too big and should be sized.

It''s always possible to chip the girdle; if you''re extremely worried about it, perhaps you can take it to a local jeweler and have them double check it for you.

Oh no! I'm so sorry! After having knocked my ring working out on weights, dropped it on tile and freaked out plenty... I'd say it's possible but improbable on wood.

Get a loupe if it'll help ease your mind. Then you can inspect it for those extra hard knocks.

I think the e-ring flying off does mean it's too big. Even a fall can knock rings off fingers. Once someone knocked me in the street and my ring almost flew off! I would get it sized so that it isn't tight, but still requires some effort to get it off.

Aw, sorry to hear that you dropped your ring. I would also ditto the other posters and make sure it''s sized properly. Definitely sounds like it''s too big. Imagine how much it will fall off in the winter time when it gets even colder!

Hello Shortee, Allison D, and Bliss:

Thanks for the reassurances. I''m pretty clumsy so I''m sure as I spend more time with my ring, i will drop it on an ever wider variety of surfaces. Yikes! So...A loupe sounds like a nice thing to have around. Where do you suggest going loupe-shopping?

Ha, yeah, I''ve been worried about the sizing on my ering for a while. It spins around and doesn''t seem to sit properly on my finger. When the jeweler sized me for this ring, she thought the 3.5 was too loose, but now the size 3.75 ring seems to spin around and I''m a bit afraid to wear it out of the house.

I bought my loupe off of eBay but you can get some nice ones from one of the PS vendors.

Definitely get it sized!

Mine doesn''t even spin anymore!

I knock my pear on things at least once a week. With a point hanging out there at 12+mm''s I''m a little nervous. But since it was a gift from me to me it doesn''t have any sentimental value, and I''m insured

I haven''t dropped it though. A drop to a hard surface could certainly cause a chip. Always good to check it out.

That''s no fun. Maybe you could get it looked at to put your mind at rest? I think getting it sized would be a good idea. Luck.

Sounds like I should find the time this week to take the ring in. Thanks, everyone! :)

Wait, does insurance cover this type of damage? Even if I am so stupid that I drop my own ring?

Yes, most insurance policies should cover chipping. I have Chubb and I know they do. If they didn't cover chipping, I don't know if I could wear my ring out! Wear it, enjoy it! But get it sized!!!

I''m embarrassed to say that I don''t have insurance on my ring, or any of my other pieces. Looks like I need to take care of a lot of things this week...!

Yep, insurance is a MUST in my opinion on anything over $7K (I''m sure everyone has their own threshhold).

You want FULL REPLACEMENT insurance as a stand alone policy (not just a jewelry rider on your homeowners). Mine covers stupidity (lost, dropped, chipped, dog ate it, etc.) and the usual theft & mugging.

if a 3.5 was too loose, you should have gone down in size to a 3.25 or possibly even a 3..a 3.75 is bigger than a 3.5 so if the 3.5 was loose than a 3.75 will definitley be looser. a ring that flys off by itself is too big

please do get your ring insured asap. most insurance company''s will cover a chip and pay for a repair or adjust the insured amount due to loss in value. depending on the extent of damage they might even replace the stone. insurance is a must if you can''t easily afford to replace your stone yourself.

Today''s my day to be a dummy. I meant to say that the jeweler thought 3.5 was too tight and she recommended a 3.75, and we went with that. It didn''t seem like it was in any danger of flying off, then, but we also did the sizing in September, when it was 20-25 degrees warmer. (It was about 80 degrees then, this morning it was about 60.)

Rec''s for insurance companies? I see there''s a vote for Chubb. Should I look into others? Is it more cost effective to insure a parcel of jewelry rather than a single item? And do I need written appraisels for each item?

I had a scare a few months ago when I dropped my ring on ceramic tile...thankfully I did not chip it, but it did hit hard enough to loosen the stone from it''s setting.

As for insurance, I have mine through my homeowners policy.

I almost had a heart attack this morning. I was sort of sleepy...it was early...and when I heard it skitter across the floor I thought I was going to just drop dead. That''s not healthy, is it?

hehee, i have the same syndrome! then i sit there for the next hour staring at my ring until i am satisfied its not hurt
