Can feathers be repaired?

Hi All,

Not sure if it's me being paranoid or not, but it appears that my fiances diamond may have an internal crack from a feather. It wasn't visible before (SI1 GIA eye clean) and it now is. We're going to take it to an appraiser to check it out. She's freaked out as am I... :(

Luckily the diamond is insured.

Question:
1.) Can a feather be repaired? If so, how? Laser drilling, etc?
2.) Anyone had any experience with feathers getting bigger and repairing them?

Thanks all!

Hello - Great article, thanks!

I wish it was dirty :) it gets cleaned daily (she's only had it ~1 month).

Are you sure it's not just the girdle reflection which you didn't notice before.
People often post here worried about that till they learn what it is.

Here's a pic.
It is that series of horizontal lines about about one third of the way up from the bottom.

I don't think it's a girdle reflection as the feathers are on the GIA report. They weren't visible before, but are now (super up close and with a 30x loop). I'm just concerned they've gotten bigger.

GIA only grades at 10X, so it's not surprising if they look more visible under 30X ....

I agree! The more you upgrade your magnifier the more you will see feather and other tiny inclusions. Use the standard and everything will be ok.
