Hi Ronda. If your purpose is just independent analysis to verify the diamond's details or for insurance purposes I'd suggest having an appraisal done. Faster, less expensive (in many cases) and depending on the appraiser you may get even more information. This may have changed slightly. GIA used to give a discount to members of the trade so it was possible for a jeweler to both make a few bucks and give the customer a discount over what they would have needed to pay if they sent it in directly. This changed a few weeks ago as part of their solutions to the ''certifigate'' scandal. GIA now charges the same fees to everyone. It''s still necessary to have the stone pulled and reset from any mounting, which for most people involves a jeweler, but for already unmounted stones it may now be better to do it directly. Many people may still find it convenient to have a jeweler in the middle who is familar with the transaction and this may very well be worth it but it''s no longer cheaper.
