I was searching on ebay yesterday and came across a diamond ring from 1943. I purchased it. Won the bid pretty cheap.

Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8927999354&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

The band is worn thin and I plan to remove the diamond and put it in a different setting. What Im wondering,

is how did they cut diamonds in 1943? I know they wouldnt have the presision near what they have today, but for the color and clarity I took the chance. (They also offer money back garuentee)

Is there a certain style they they used for thier modern cuts back then? Thanks

A 1943 diamond might be identically cut to a recent cut, or it might be fashioned a bit differently. WHo knows when it actually was cut? Maybe it was re-set in 1943 from an older ring. It could be very well cut, but it may be otherwise. The date really does not tell us much.

Hi, Jensia...

Sure there were beautifully cut stones in the ''40s...and before that too!.

Regarding the ring you just purchased. I''d probably take the stated stats with a HUGE grain of salt...but even still, it might be very pretty.

It certainly SOUNDS like a good deal.

Good luck...and keep us posted as to what you think when you get it!

Oh I know . I am not expecting an E vvs, but hopefully its close. For that price I took the risk. I expected it to get bid higher than it did. She had a couple other items for sale .One ring she was sellinghad L colore diamonds looked L, ( at least the best you can judge from a computer, lol) at least she wasnt calling the L''s a g ,.. so mabey she knows what she is talking about.

Cant wait to get it and see though:))

Forgive my typos, guess I should have proof read before I posted, lol

Update:

Got the ring and it wasnt a deal . The girdle is craked and I can see some color flash where the crack is, where it looks like
someone tried to repair it

The color was correct but that was all . Even though its eye clean, its craked so an I1. I just contacted the seller
and hope to be able to return it. I know its ebay and expected mabey a G s1 or something but not a craked diamond.
Its too bad to because the ring is so pretty

Ok need opinions.

I went and had the ring looked at at the jewlery repair shop.

It was advertised as a round modern brilliant, its not its an OMC.

She said the chip is small ebough that it will not effect the durability of the diamond,

and that for the size (.40) its not worth grinding it out.

Normaly I would return it in a heartbeat., but it really is a pretty ring.

I know nothing about OMCs though, so did I pay to much for this being chipped?

I paid $235 for the ring. It has VVS E colored side stones (those were accurate) that toal .12

The center is an E in color, with a minor inclusion (besides the chip on the facet above the girdle) that looks like
a hard to see cloud with the loupe. 14k white gold band.

Would appreciate any opinions. Our of principle I want to return it, as it was misrepresented, but Ii REALLY REALLY like it,lol

But are OMCS cheap and would it sell the same unchipped? Thanks

Jensia

OMCs (Old Mine Cuts) are among my FAVORITE cut of diamonds! Granted, they are different from modern RBs (bigger, chunkier facets, open culet, often "cushionish" in shape) but IMO have enormous appeal in their own right.

I''d keep that baby, and congratulate my self for finding a good deal on Ebay!

Since you''re planning on remounting it, you can probably cover up the chip with a prong.

I''d look at that stone as a wonderful antique treasure, not a chipped oddity!

If you love it, keep it. I think its gorgeous. I agree with widget, if you reset you could probably cover the chip with a prong.

So its still a good deal even with the chip? the Repair shop said they could reshank the ring for 95 dollars.

(the band is thin but I already knew that) They sais they can retip it for $50, so if they retip it, I can have them change the positon of the diamond. The chip isnt eye visable, only loupe visable.

The idea that the woman who owned this ring had it for 6o years, and I like it having a history. This is the firsts omc Ive seen and I have to say it really is pretty. Kinda a icy look to it. My husband thinks it is very pretty as well. So I decided I am going to keep it,lol But stay away from ebay diamonds for a while:) I would never buy a big diamond purchase there, but I like to look for the smaller ones like this. Its rare I see smaller E anf F colored stones there so I jumped on this one. Im wearing it now on the same hand as my white gold solitaire. They comliment each other.

Thanks for the help:)

I do think it's a good buy. Especially since you love it and the chip won't affect the durability. And I love that it has a story to it. That makes it so much more special.
