Hi everyone!

My eternity band is a shared uprong with .16 size stones set in platinum and is a size 5. I had beads put in, but I''m still not a fan of how it looks. Can the ring be made into a size 4 1/2? I went to a jeweler and he told me that they could take a stone out and there would be a small mark as to where they did it. Another jeweler told me it couldn''t be done. Help?

I was always under the assumption they could not be but I could be wrong

I am NOT a jeweler, but I am an engineer, if that means anything, but mechanically speaking, I would think it would be bad to resize a full shared-prong eternity setting. It seams to me the security of the diamonds would be compromised because of the shared prongs which is entirely dependent on the geometry of the ring, which was cast for a specific size finger and a specific number of diamonds. Cutting out a diamond and the crimping together the two ends and soldering them together would decrease the inside diameter of the ring, this is good because you want the ring smaller. however, at the same time it would also change the prong angle in relation to the band and increase the total distance between the prong tips. I would imagine this either shouldnt be done, or would require the entire ring to need to be reworked, at which point it might be better to just have the diamonds removed, your old ring melted down and recast into the new size.

again, i am not a jeweler, so i could be totally wrong about this, but it got me thinking.

You generally buy an eternity ring with the knowledge that they cannot be resized. I usually recommend people have them made with a small sizing area to allow for size change in the future. Just remember that over the years your weight may go up a little and increase your ring size. At that point, you''ll be awfully glad the ring is a little big now!

It can be shimmed inside, nearly invisibly when removed from the finger and not visible at all when being worn. A 1/2 size reduction does not need a stone to be removed. In a few years you might just need the 1/2 size back and the shimming can be removed easily.
