Hi everyone!

I'm new to this glamorous world of diamonds and rings, so your help is greatly appreciated!

I recently bought a vintage Tiffany 18k gold solitaire ring setting, with platinum 6 prongs head. The ring was meant for a 0.32ct diamond, but I'm wondering if it can take a bigger size diamond? 0.50ct+? Would the jeweller charge more for that service?

Thanks! :loopy:

Somebody else recently asked a similar question - you might find this thread helpful:

It looks like you'll be dealing with a difference of about .8mm. That doesn't seem like a lot, but the stone will at a minimum have to sit lower in the basket for the prongs to accommodate that extra girth, so you will be altering the lines of that classic Tiffany setting. If you look at the Stuller website referenced in that thread, you'll see that if you were ordering a Stuller Tiffany replica, you'd go up two head sizes if you were to go from a .32 to a .50 stone.

If it could be done which is unlikely, it could only be done by bending the prongs outward and cutting the seats very deep to take the larger stone. This will not only look bad in profile, but it will weaken the prongs.

Talk with your jeweler about it, but I am guessing that he will tell you it is a bad idea.
