Hi all,
I''ve posted a thread a few days ago, saying that i thought I''d cracked a diamond in my RHR when I hit my ring very hard against the table - twice - last week. (Thanks to everyone who wrote in with your sympathy and kind words).
Well, today, I went to see my regular gemologist who examined the diamond (in its setting, not loose) and he said that what I thought was a crack was actually my orginal feather, the stone being of SI1 quality. (He said that a "feather" is really a crack which I already knew but I said I wanted to distinguish between a feather "feather" and a large expanded feather, being a "crack" ). He said that the feather hadn''t changed at all since he last looked at it in 2006 (he had a hand-plotted diagram of the two diamonds which he drew at the time).
I expressed surprise at this and said that I''d never seen the crack/ feather with my 10x loupe on the diamond before and I must have looked at it hundreds of times, if not thoussands of times (I''ve had the stones for almost 12 yrs - when my mom half gave/ half sold them to my husband who gave them to me as a wedding present).
He said perhaps it was the different lightings and/ or how dirty or clean the diamonds were. I said I clean all my diamonds regularly and examine them at least once every two-three weeks, sometimes every week. He then proceeded to explain that had it been a new crack, then i) there wouldn''t be dirt inside the feather (ick!!); ii) there would be small "beards" around the crack; and iii) there would be a chip at the beginnning of the crack.
I then responded that i) if the crack is from the original feather, then of course the dirt would remain in there; ii) I wouldn''t be able to see the beards anyway (so I had to take his word that there was no beard); iii) there WAS a tiny chip at the begining of the crack, which I could feel with my fingertip. He insisted that he was right and that what I think is a tiny chip is just surface uneveness, because the girdle is bruted and that there''re lots of tiny little "rough areas'' on the girdle already. He insisted that there was no chip, and that I hadn''t actually made the feather worse.
I asked if he''d would like to take the stone out of the setting for a more thorough examination, to which he said "no need"!
Whilst I''m happy at this news, meaning I won''t have to claim the miserable insurance amount (pls see my other thread) from the insurance company and I get to keep this sentimental piece of jewellery, I am really surprised at this discovery today.
I''d love to hear from the experts as to what you make of this.
Attached is a picture showing the "crack"/ feather. IRL, it is much more visible than this, and both my husband and I (who are in our 40''s can see it), when we never could before.
Well, I can ''t seem to attach the picture. Will try later...
