That''s because I can''t figure out what size to target. I''d like it to be able to stand on its own, without overshadowing my e-ring.Date: 5/7/2009 9:04:08 PM

Thats great! Although that only explains the reason...not the details! We want to know what your planning woman! How dare you keep us in the dark! Its like showing a dog a treat and keeping it out of their reach! have you no pitty woman!?![]()
My apologies to those who hate math but I’m indulging in my favourite subject.
Of course there will be small variations between stones but for the most part, I’d say the face up size ends up quite close. What is misleading is the depth. RBs have a depth of 62% and OMCs have a depth of 68% and apparent diameter length. However because of the round shape and corners, the total surface area is actually about the same.

Arhh! Miss Chrono, brains and great taste! lol..![]()
You''re a champ my dear, thankyou very much for taking the time to explain.
You are very good at this math business - me..hrmm..not so much![]()
But your explanation was clear enough for even I to follow, so thankyou!
And good news too!

(oh, btw - you and Stephanie need not worry - I am not shopping in the same size range
as you girls - so no competition from lil ''ol me)![]()
I meant that the brain perceives on paper that a 6.5 mm RB will appear larger than a 6.0 mm cushion when in actuality, they are the same face up size. This is because the 6.5 mm is round aka no corners whereas the 6.0 mm cushion has “extended” corners. This point is proven by the surface area calculation. Does that make sense?Date: 5/8/2009 9:51:11 AM

Hey C, just a clarification - with this last bit, are you saying that the cushion with the square corners,
the eye perceives as larger than a round shape - so than the difference in depth kinda ''evens out''..?
Please correct if I''m way off!
Sorry if I''m sounding dumb, just want to make sure I''m understanding you right
Cheers matey!![]()

AJ,
My guess is that they are very close in face up size. Here’s how I calculate it:
1 ct RB: 6.5 mm
Surface area formula = 0.25 x 3.14 x 6.5 x 6.5 = 33 mm square
1 ct OMC: 5.90 mm thereabouts based on my OMC2 which is 1.07ct and measures 6.16 x 5.91
Surface area formula = 5.9 x 5.9 = 35 mm square
Of course there will be small variations between stones but for the most part, I’d say the face up size ends up quite close. What is misleading is the depth. RBs have a depth of 62% and OMCs have a depth of 68% and apparent diameter length. However because of the round shape and corners, the total surface area is actually about the same.

Whatever size pleases you. I always encourage everyone to go as large as the budget will stretch.Date: 5/8/2009 4:53:54 PM

Hi Chrono, thanks for the info. Do you know where I can see the GOG signature OMC facet pattern? And is there an open culet in the signature faceting?
You can see it in the ''Chunk in the Trunk'' video where all 4 OMCs have exactly the same faceting pattern. The culet is large per GIA grading. It is also observable in the video. I think what I called OMC2 (1.07 ct G VS2 cushion) is back on his website. If he''s updated the picture, you should also be able to see a static picture of the facet pattern.

Harriet-what type of setting are you going to put it in? If it is not going into a halo I would get at least 2.5. I have a 2.38RB and I purchased a 2.36 J old style cushion from Jon with a 1;16 ratio. If I turn it EW I am happy with the size compared to my RB, when it''s NS, I am not. The dimensions are 7.36x8.6 if that helps. I was going to upgrade that stone to a 2.5 H, ( I have some color issues with the J) but the difference between the 2 stones was not worth the amount of $ to upgrade-so now I am waiting to see Jon''s new stones when they come back from GIA and if I like what I see I will also be ordering one-probably with a desired lw around 8 because I am going to put it in a Leon halo to add the size I want.
Since you are so close, and Jon has so many cushions in so many sizes and shapes, why don''t you hop on the LIRR and try some on!

Oh I''m not worried! I just would have laid claim to that beautiful James Meyer (I think thats who made it correct...?) bezel setting that you have in your avatar![]()
LOL! Its okay though! Jonathan has already sourced my rough for me! Besides! The more the merrier! My cushion needs some friends to hang out with! And who better than those who have GREAT taste?!?!?! I''m thrilled that my idea is leading others to beautiful cushions as well! To be honest...when I shot Jon an email asking for certain size/color/clarity...I wasnts sure what he''s say! Thankfully it was a YES and now I''m getting my dream stone (well...for nowLOL)![]()
If it wasnt for poster like you I NEVER would have thought to ask, let alone found GOG or even KNOWN WHAT A OMC IS!??!
BTW...I''m watching out for a vintage watch for my wedding gift now...![]()
I didnt get one for myself for my b-day...but you guys are naughty and I cant get one off my mind! I''m hoping the one I have my eye one says in budget and can be serviced in time to wear with my wedding dress!![]()

Lol, thankyou Stephanie for the compliments -
oh, and you will have to fight me pretty good for my Jim Meyer hon!![]()
Yes, I agree it is a great thing that Jon is doing ''diamonds to order'' like this - I believe that was very much
where his business was heading, at least when it comes to us particular Ps''ers![]()
But seriously, it makes sense and is a great service, and in my perception it is a win-win for both vendor and buyer.
I do hope that others consider adding this type of service to their sites too.![]()

stephanie, you''re asking the wrong person hon!
I am a ''warmer colour fan girl'' - my current ering is a K SI1 , 1.25ct Isee2 RB,and I love it. Love the K, wouldn''t have it another way - lol..
And with the cushions, I''ve infact requested the J-M range - that would be ideal for me.
I''m aware that colour will likely ''show'' a lil more in the cushions than in ideal RB''s, however I also
believe that in older style diamonds, the warmth is more complementary.
Infact, if you look through the inventory of say Erica Grace, most of their finest vintage diamonds are in that
range - and they look incredible!
So, at the end of the day it is of course personal preference and what your budget will allow.
My personal ''sweet spot'' is K, SI1 - but I will happily go down to an M.![]()
This is Erica''s new 3.64 M VS2 ring'', and its killer - I''ve seen photos on the hand too, and its gorgeous! doesn''t look yellow at all (if that''s what you''re worried about).
(hope you don''t mind E!).
