I just purchased a lovely VVS2-VS1 1.13ct Princess Cut Blue Diamond (irradiated), and wanted to set it in a very unique engagement ring in a kite setting - mounted not traditionally, but at an angle so that it shows on the hand as a diamond shape.

Several wise members have advised me that with my current setting (see photo), the points of the diamond are exposed and will be in for some serious damage and abuse if I don''t figure out a way to protect them.

The setting is a semi-mount with two kite-set white diamonds, and plenty of space in the center to set my diamond either traditionally in a princess setting, or in a kite setting to match the other stones.

My questions are these:

Can I solve my problem by having a jeweler remove the current (four prong) head and replace it with a princess head with corner protectors?

Or

Do I have to, as someone suggested, find some sort of head mount that protects all sides of the diamond?

I like the look of the diamond as is, with unprotected corners. Since I know that is not feasible, is there a minimally visually intrusive princess head available? Is there any way that anyone sees that I would be able to set the stone in an "invisible setting" so that more of the diamond can be seen from all angles? Are their protective mounts similar to some of the X head mounts available for round diamonds that I have seen for solitares, on this website?

This is a beatiful diamond with a lot of brilliance, in a very lovely light color, and I would like it to be as visible as possible. Does anyone have any setting ideas? Any pictures? Any brands that come to mind that would showcase this diamond?

Help!

This was my original mounting idea -- notice the unprotected corners, and my concern.

if it''s a peg head a jewellery can switch this head out for a corner-covered princess head no problem, in whatever orientation you want. If it''s an integrated head it becomes a much more complex project. I would advise taking it to an experienced jeweller and asking his/her opinion.
