HouseCat, that video was awesome! I am embarrassed to admit that I JUST purchased a flat iron this fall and didn''t realize you could CURL hair with one. Others mentioned it in this thread and I was sitting here scratching my head wondering if it was like curling ribbon on packages with scissors. Cool.

You''re not alone Monnie...I thought the same thing. I was like "nice! I had no idea hair curled like ribbon!"

Housecat, that link changed my life! Lol. I had no idea you could curl hair with a straight iron like that. I''m so trying it tomorrow

I''ve always used curling irons, but I felt that they looked a bit too ringlet-y and not wavey enough. This is great!

Btw, I want hair like that girl in the video! I couldn''t get volume like that no matter what. Beautiful.

Link How to curl hair with a flat iron.

Because my hair wants to fall flat and straight, I have found that the flat iron is best for long lasting curls. It never fails, a half hour after curling with a curling iron, my hair looks as if it was flat ironed.

Link If you want to use a curling iron. Just be sure to use a good curling iron.
I do this with my flat iron corioliss and love the look of it too, though it takes forever with my hair

so I don''t do it very often, I find my braid and quick tip curling takes the least amount of work, but it is less frizzy when I use the flat iron..

Velcro rollers set vertically with a setting spray (stronger hold hairspray). Blow the rollers with heat for your hair dryer. After you undo the rollers, you can probably wear the style for a good 5 or 6 hours solidly.

Italia-how do I get the velcro rollers to not make a birds nest out of my hair? I''m so bad with them they get tangled and stuck. Also, are you supposed to roll your hair with them when wet or dry??

Clean sections helps...but also I prefer a more modern velcro roller which is plastic with teeth as opposed to old school true "velcro". Starting from the bottom on up, keeping your sections clean will help with tangling a lot. Blow the hair out first and then roll using an aerosol spray to finish the look. Wear them for at least an hour before removing...but you can wear them for however long you''d like, really.

I''m glad you ladies liked the link! Hair thursdays is one of my favorite blogs. It''s very informative and you get to vote on how people will cut their hair. Later they come back with their results. Really fun!

Youtube also has videos on how to curl your hair with a flat iron. Some of those videos show how to get more riglet type curls.

I totally tried the flat iron curling thing last night--LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

I have hair that is relatively wavy naturally, but I've found that the best way to get it to REALLY hold a curl is to wash it at night, towel dry it until it's damp, then pin curl or braid it and sleep on it. If I'm going for more of just a wavy look, I brush it out with my fingers in the shower then put some product in it while it's still damp then let it air dry. If I blow dry it it ends up a lot straighter, whereas if I let it air dry, it comes out wavy.

I did that for my engagement pictures and my hair looked awesome. Here's the link if you want to see what I mean.

LOVE all the tips and tricks here ladies - I''m going to bookmark this page for future reference, I totally want to try that trick with the flat iron now!

for the ladies who like the flat iron trick, here's the link to the GHD tutorial that i thought was REALLY great. the beauty wave is the loose waves, the soft cursl is taht cali girl beachy look. i ended up buying the ghd based on the tutorial and it did what the tutorial showed. in the end i ended up reurning the ghd because 1) it was pricey and 2) i didn't use it often enough (i'm too lazy to curl my hair daily to need a quickie method and when i go out the method below works better for me) 3) the curls didn't last as loong as below method for me. although everytime i watch the tutorial it makes me want to buy it again!

i have TONS of hair that is super baby fine and stick stick straight and hangs almost halfway down my back. i've gotten curls to stay for 2-3 days after lots of trial and error over many years by this method:

1) wash hair the night before
2) dirty up hair even more with mousse (for medium or coarser textured hair, you can use a stronger setting lotion/gel) and thermal protectant
3) take a section, lightly mist with light hold hairspray or spray gel (again, stronger hold if needed for varying texture), make sure each section is smooth
4) curl vertically
5) most important part! you need to set the hair in the curl shape until the hair completely cools. after i release the hair from the iron, i immediately roll it up in one of those old fashioned foam curlers or make pin curls with my fingers and bobby pins following the shape of the curl from the iron
6) move on to the next section
7) by the time i finish all my hair, the inital curls are usually cool (or i do my makeup/get dressed) and i take them out following the curl shape
8) at this point the curls are super bouncy sausage curls, which if this is what you're looking for, spray lightly with hairspray again to hold
9) if you want a looser curl, take all the cooled curls out and use your fingers to loosen and shake out the curls to your desired amount, then lightly spray with hairspray
10) you can also use a blow dryer set on LOW and COOL to blow out some of the tightness for a more natural look

This is NOT a quickie method, but it LASTS. I use cheapie suave medium to light hold hairspray and my hair isn't cranchy even with what seems like a lot of spray on paper. i really just barely spritz each section. the hold of the curl is more from letting the curl cool rolled up and set rather than all the hair stuff.

Takes me about 30-40 minutes to do my entire head (depending on how many sections I do) because i have so much hair and it's so long. I can do other ppl with less/shorter hair in 15-20 minutes. I've slept on the curls and the next morning they're just looser and fuller. A few times I've been able to pull it out for 3 days.

ETA: my method does more of the glamour curl look. and alternating the direction of curl gives a more natural look.

Great links and advice. I have wavy hair but it does not hold curl or wave for some reason. The braiding thing works though. I''ll have to try the other methods.

This thread is awesome. I am so appreciative of all the advice. I have been attemping the waves for the past couple days, both with the flat iron and with a curling iron, and all I seem to get is a flat section of hair with a really flipped out end on the bottom. And within 20 minutes of ''curling'' (see aforementioned description of said ''curl''), my hair seems to easily releaste quite a few sections pretty easily. I have been using mousse and hairspray.

I think I need more practice...
