OK - here's the challenge -
LOVE the style, but .....

My ring is NOT holding up to my usage

I understand some women are gentle with their rings; however...

Just like people have addressed size as influenced by your "peers," I'm learning the same principle applies to wearability.

I spent the weekend speaking to friends and photographing the underside of their palms. These are all 1.5 - 2+ CTW stones, as it my one above (2.05) The conclusion is they wear them 24/7/365 - I got replies like : "haven't removed in 30 yrs except for cleaning" - Tiffany, Marshall Pierce etc.

I believe the solution for the platinum is to move to a harder alloy - per Mark Morrell's fine article this seems to be 900/Ir. It has the highest Vickers score. NONE of the rings I photographed looked anything like the wear & tear on mine after 6 months.

OK - now to the side stones. They've become abraded - any creative solutions to limiting this? :

set them differently - bezel plus prong??

switch them out for diamonds? Champagne to add contrast?
I'll post a couple examples to get the creative juices flowing!

I WILL try to be more carful, but I'd like to wear my ring like other ladies in my peer group. Even concerning the sapphires - I ran into a women at a party last week with a Lady Di sorta RHR.. She said she hasn't removed it for 18 years. I know this is shocking to some of you...... Please give me some creative solutions! I totally appreciate it!

What do you do with your hands? Your setting seems very sturdy - full bezels and substantial shank.

True, Baby Monster, but it has to be the Plat itself. These rings I don't remove for weeks on end - no damage.

If you look at Mark Morrell's page again, you will see that the hardest is 95platinum/5ruthenium with 135 vickers. He finds the 90/10iridium easier to work with in the way he makes rings. However, your ring was cast, so I would go with the 95/5ruthenium which is what Tiffany uses, and most of their e-ring settings are cast (unless you are having MM make the new ring, of course!).

I pretty much said this on your other thread, but if you plan to wear all the time and have already seen abrasion on your sapphires, I think you need to go to diamond sides. I'd probably go with slightly smaller diamonds to make the stones not quite as wide across your finger.

Oh boy - thanks for the clarification.

If any ring was going to be called sturdy, I would think it would be that one. I think you probably do need to switch to diamond
side stones. How about light yellow if you are looking for something besides white? Possibly a lower bezel setting would help
and the plat like you are talking about. I would go with smaller bezels (or smaller stone) so it doesn't seem so wide across the top.

Thanks for weighing in Tyty - can you say more about the width? I thought it was OK width wise.

Since your sapphires are already showing signs of damage, I would switch them out for diamonds. Bezel setting is the most protective and unless you plan to recess them even lower into the setting, which I wouldn't because it would just kill the colour and performance, there is no other way to increase the level of protection.

Perhaps the width is fine...I guess it all depends on your finger size. I would want a smoother transition between the shank
and the top of the first stone but that has more to do with the depth of the bezel than the width.

Do you like the setting with the exception of how it is wearing?

Edit - do you like bigger jewelry? What about something like this...I would probably have the stones set lower in the split.

I love your ring but I think it looks too wide & perhaps that might one contributing factor of hitting it often. I like the look of your sapphires but if I had a choice, I would choose diamonds for this project. If you like the size of the stones & don't want to go smaller, & want to use your sapphires (after a buffing) then perhaps a 3 stone style like David Klass did with a more compact design & keep the metal polished on the sides & smooth bezels. I love bezels so I'm a bit biased, but in your case & you say you're hard on your rings, I would stick to a bezel & not do prongs.

DS is right, go to 95 Plat/5 Ruth. for the alloy. I think that might help along with a more mainstream design.

Here's the style I was thinking might work best for you. =)

Looking forward to seeing your reset.

CCUheartNurse - I SO appreciate your feedback. I'm not trying to be dense, but I don't see what's "more compact" in the DK ring? I was anticipating bezels that were not full, in order to decrease the width. (let me find an example)

Happy to hear clarification!

You got the idea. :wink2: Maybe thin the bezel a bit around all the stones ( not just the centre stone) to shave off a bit more bulk & width. :)). In the ring David did, the side stones closest to the centre doesn't have a full bezel around it looking like it's blended into the side. If I was on my laptop I could post a pic but it's hard to do on my phone. Sorry!

I so agree with Judy and love the shape and proportions of the DK ring. Slightly thinner bezels would be great.

I am attaching a picture to show you what we are all talking about. Your sapphires were just a bit large to set in the 3 bezel setting the way BG did it, at least. The sides of the current ring really overhang your finger in width and that is why we are suggesting slightly smaller side stones and maybe alterations to the setting. Here is a picture from your thread.
